When reviewing the betting odds on today's four games, let call this - Elimination Friday - trying to figure which game to take off the docket to come up with three NHL picks.

Quite frankly, I would like to eliminate three games, because beyond my top choice, the other two required quite a bit more research just to determine a winner against the NHL odds. I will definitely be giving my best shot coming off back to back 3-0 days for just the second time this season and I'm in a really great groove right now for NHL picks, winning 15 of the last 19 days.

Ducks Are Making Noise
Anaheim (24-25 SU) still remains last in scoring in the NHL in scoring at 2.16 goals a game, but they making real progress to escape the basement and in turn moving up in the standings. In winning seven of eight, the Ducks have averaged 3.6 GAG, which included impressive 4-2 drubbing at Los Angeles last night. Contributions are coming from everywhere, but center Ryan Getzlaf has been the most sizzling Anaheim player with 11 points in past 10 contests (eight wins). David Perron and Rysan Garbutt's name have been on the scoresheets frequently also.

Arizona (24-27 SU) thought they fixed part of their defensive problems with the fine play of rookie goaltender Louis Domingue, but even he's been breaking down with defensemen in front o him not doing their jobs, allowing 16 goals in the last three tilts.

Anaheim was released as -190 favorite over the Coyotes at home and looks to go up to 29-13 after their opponent allows five goals or more in their previous game.

Playing a Hunch in Winnipeg
For my money, the side in the Carolina and Winnipeg matchup offered no value. Instead, started looking into the total. Both teams have shown tendencies towards the Over. For example, in the Hurricanes past four contests, they have either scored five goals (twice) or surrendered four scores (two different games). In that same period, the Jets have lit the lamp 10 times when conceding 14 goals. Sure looks like an Over right?

Well, not exactly. Carolina has played 10 straight times in which the closing total was five, juiced either way for Over or Under and they are 2-1-7 OVER. Winnipeg has played with total mostly at 5.5 and they are 6-4-2 UNDER in their last dozen ventures to the rink.

With the oddsmakers total at 5.5, keep in mind the last four confrontations have all been UNDER's and while we acknowledge the Jets have Over tendencies, the Hurricanes are 26-10 UNDER in road games when playing only their second contest in five days the last two seasons.

Columbus Gets the Call on Road
This space came down to Pittsburgh at Tampa Bay or Columbus (20-33) at Calgary (22-27 SU) and really thought the first contest was more of a tossup. Not that the Blue Jackets vs. Flames was a neon sign flashing - Play Me. First thought was the Columbus record speaks for itself and Calgary plays quite a bit better at home as 15-10 SU mark indicates. Yet when looking over the numbers, the Flames started to flameout as a possible selection.

Calgary has lost seven of 10 and after winning 11 in a row at the Scotia Saddledome, they are 3-5 since, not exactly what you want from a -180 favorite. Columbus on the other hand has won three of four and five of nine (pretty good for them) and shown a little more offensive spunk in scoring 2.77 GAG. I am the first to understand they are rather awful defensively, tied for the most goals given up at 3.15 per contest, but after victory at Vancouver last evening, they are 21-11 off a road win.

Given the choice of backing Calgary as a favorite or taking a chance a pretty good payday with the Blue Jackets with less risk, I'll choose the latter.
