Nice to wake up to more NHL odds options for today. In all, an even dozen games to peruse through, but don't be fooled, this batch has some potential pratfalls which could set up bad day.

Great example is Dallas at Colorado. The Stars just ended their seven-game road losing streak on Tuesday, but faces Avalanche squad which has been awful matchup for them, losing 10 of 11 and all six at the Pepsi Center. Though Colorado sure has all the elements for NHL picks, with goalie Semyon Varlamov back in net, it might not be that simple. Varlamov has missed several games being in court from lawsuit brought by former girlfriend. Ends up he wins the suit and 126K in damages. Does Varlomov come back focused or is he still distracted against Dallas club that can score in bunches?

Here are today three picks and I will tell, pretty pleased to go 3-0 yesterday with just three games, making it 14 of 18 winning days.

Washington Ends Brief Losing Streak
The Capitals (35-13 SU) first game back from the break was perfect example of "one of those days". With Alex Ovechkin ineligible and goalie Braden Holtby given the night off after All-Star activities, Washington lost at home to Florida 5-2 in spite of 38-19 shots edge, going 0 for 8 on the power play, and failing to score on two 5-on-3's.

Having lost two consecutive times and three of four, look for greater determination from the Caps this evening with everyone back. The Islanders (26-22 SU) are not going to just roll over, having won four of six and have begun to score with a 3.5 goals average, compared to 2.8 on the season.

The NHL odds have Washington at -150 and they have six of eight over New York at the Verizon Center. Besides having the best record in the league, they are first in scoring (3.3), power play percentage scoring (25.3%) and second in goals allowed (2.3), backed with a 18-6 SU mark at the Verizon Center.

Riding the Rangers
The New York Rangers (27-23 SU) are now labeled as just an inconsistent club, having won consecutive games only once since late November. Though this is maddening to fans and Blueshirts bettors, they are in a much better place than Minnesota (23-27 SU) at the moment. The Wild have dropped eight of nine and it has been a team (non)effort.

Minnesota has been constructed as a defensive model, yet has allowed three or more goals in five of those losses. Offensively, they have scored two or fewer times in seven of previous 10 contests. The Wild also ranks 22nd in scoring on the road at 2.3 GAG and does figure to have muck luck against netminder Henrik Lundqvist, who is 15-5 SU at Madison Square Garden. With the Rangers at -140, nice value for team that is 16-3 after three straight games with 33 or more shots on goal the last three seasons.

Calling For Another Detroit Short Circuit
Last evening picked against Red Wings (25-25 SU) in Tampa and was correct and will forecast for the same exact thing to occur a little further south where Detroit visits the front-running Panthers (30-20 SU). Even with the loss, the Red Wings have won seven of nine away outings, but run into a Florida crew that is on another winning streak.

The Panthers won 12 in a row, followed that up with four defeats, but offense has found another gear in winning four in a row, scoring 19 goals, which can make them virtually unbeatable when matched with the NHL's best defense at 2.1 goals allowed.

Florida was released as -150 home favorites over Detroit and has won 10 of their last 11 games at the BB&T Center and looks ready to continue hot streak.
