The train has gotten off the tracks a bit when looking at the NHL odds of late. If you are an underdog player, it has been fool's gold as improbable situational winners are cashing.

I say good for you if that is your preference, it makes sense to me. With the season dwindling down in numbers and so many teams fighting to make the Stanley Cup playoffs or jockeying for position, some even quality teams just do not deal with pressure well from time to time, or in-explicitly just get off their game. Teams out of the chase with nothing to play are just waiting for season to be over, but if they are allowed to hang in games they have no business doing so, sometimes they get emotionally involved and pull upsets.

Doing the same old thing and expecting different result is not intelligent, thus for NHL picks, will take a little different look around and pass on a typical play for me today like Anaheim, who has lost three straight, and work the NHL odds a different way.

St. Louis Stays Focused In Calgary
After battling early season injuries and some real dry periods when it came to scoring, St. Louis (41-29 SU) has stayed the course, waited to get healthy and trusted defense as anchor until offense came around. In the midst winning 11 of 14, including the last six, the Blues have been laser-focused in their last three victories over other top Western Conference teams in Chicago, Anaheim and at Dallas.

Over their next three road contests, the Blues will take on the worst of what the West has to offer and in trying to secure the best record in the conference, this is where you do not want to slip up. Calgary (28-40 SU) has lost nine of 11 and have been the Blues whipping boy in losing 11 of 13 to St. Louis. While the Blues at -165 might sound high, they are 12-1 in road games against teams allowing three or goals a game in the second half of the season the last three years.

Look for Scoring in Brooklyn
Going to let history be my guide for Florida traveling to face the New York Islanders. The last nine times these two have gone to battle, the total is 8-0-1 OVER. Of course past results are not always why this has occurred, thus went digging a little deeper to see if this could be supported.

Florida's offense has been white hot in scoring 15 goals in past three games and I am the first to acknowledge that happen at home. However, defensively, the Panthers have not been good anywhere, permitting 3.5 goals a game in their last eight outings.

Prior to losing 3-1 at Boston Saturday, the Islanders were scoring 3.6 GAG and given Florida's current defensive play, they should score at about that level again. The New York stop troops have all been a little worse than normal at 2.85 GAA compared to season average of 2.5. Everything seem to point towards a OVER play on the total of 5.

Vancouver Steps Up Defeat Winnipeg Again
Maybe Winnipeg (28-40 SU) should ask the NHL if they could where their old Atlanta Thrashers sweaters tonight, because that was the last time won in Vancouver (27-40 SU), when the Jets were still going by that name before relocating.

This was six games ago and at this moment, I really do not see things changing much with the Canucks showing a glimpse of playing better hockey in winning three of four. These clubs have not met since November, when the Jets having won 4-1 on home ice and Vancouver is 8-4 playing with revenge after scoring one goal or less in previous meeting.

Neither team is particularly inspiring, but given Winnipeg's problems in Vancouver and being 8-19 off a win, the Canucks at -125 are tempting.
