The Phoenix Coyotes are starting to snap out of their funk…it appears. On Sunday, they’ll visit a Vancouver Canucks team that’s had plenty of their own problems in the last couple of weeks. Find out where we have decided to place our NHL picks in tonight's matchup.

The Canucks have dominated this series at home as they’ve won 22 of the last 33 meetings. Totals bettors will want to note that eight of the last meetings have stayed under the number.

The Phoenix Coyotes Can Win Because…

They have a little bit of momentum on their side. They’ve won three of their last five games – one of which was a 1-0 win over Vancouver – which doesn’t seem like much but when you consider they had lost 12 of 15 before that, this is a step in the right direction.

Vancouver is a mess these days as they’ve dropped four of their last six. Their latest failure was a 2-1 home loss to the Nashville Predators, which goes to show just how far they’ve fallen. On December 14th, the Canucks were 20-10-5 after winning their seventh straight game. Entering Sunday’s game, they have dropped nine of their last 12.

The issue for the Canucks is their offense, which has completely disappeared. They have just nine goals in their last seven games. It doesn’t help matters that they’re playing without leading scorer Henrik Sedin, who has missed two straight and might be out again on Sunday. That’s why the Coyotes are worth a shot with your NHL picks

The Vancouver Canucks Can Win Because….

Phoenix has been one of the worst teams in the NHL over the last six weeks. The Coyotes are just 6-10-4 in their last 20 and when you start looking at the six wins they’ve achieved, it’s not exactly encouraging. They’ve topped Ottawa on the road, Edmonton twice, Calgary, Vancouver and New Jersey. A lack of quality goaltending seems to be the issue as Coyotes netminder Mike Smith has a GAA of 2.80 in January. That’s not horrible but he’s given up 10 goals in his last three outings. The Coyotes are not good enough to consistently overcome that.

They aren’t a good road team either as they are 4-8 when away and facing a total of 5.5. The Canucks are 8-4 when at home with the same total.

Although the Canucks have been shaky of late, they have been a good bet this season when play teams with a losing record. They are 17-6 in that role, which means they are 11-22 against winning teams. The Coyotes are struggling and they should be able to take advantage to cash for your sports picks.

Outlook & Pick

This is a tough game to call but there’s simply no way I can lay -160 with Canucks right now. Both teams are struggling and anything can happen in this matchup. Realistically, Vancouver should cover on the NHL odds because they do feast on the weaker teams in the league but they have recent home losses to Nashville, Philadelphia and Tampa Bay – all of which cost bettors about -140 or -150. Keep that in mind.

Instead, I’ll take the under. The Canucks aren’t scoring much these days and they’re playing without Henrik Sedin. As long as he’s out, that should help this game should stay under the number.
