Eastern Conference Upstart versus Perennial Contender
The Penguins will play host to the Islanders on Friday at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, and the opening face-off slated for 7:05 PM ET. According to SBR's live NHL odds, the Penguins are a -175 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. The Penguins are also -1.5 (+171) and the Islanders are +1.5 (-190) on the NHL puck-line at Bookmaker. These Metropolitan Division rivals have met only time this season, and the Penguins skated away with a 3-1 home win on October 18th. The Penguins went 3-1 versus the Islanders a season ago.

Early Surprise on the Island
The New York Islanders have surprised some of the experts by their 12-6 start to the season. They’ve done so by being explosive offensively. The Islanders enter today averaging a robust 3.3 goals per game, and having won 5 of their last 6-games. However, I would be remiss not to mention, they’re also allowing 2.9 goals per contest. The Isles have seen each of their previous 4-games go over the total. They’ve yet to see any of their home games stay under the total, with 7 going over the number, and the other resulting in a push. The road has been a whole different story. The Islanders have seen 7 of their 11-games on the road stay under the total, and they’ve also gone a very profitable 7-4 against the money line in those 11 away contests.

Powerful Pens
The Pittsburgh Penguins are off and running once again. They’ve won their last 3, and 10 of their last 11-games. They enter today with a superb 13-4 money line record on the season. The Penguins are #1 scoring team in the NHL averaging 3.8 goals per game. They have a huge +1.7 goal per game differential, and their special teams are the best in all the NHL to this point. As a matter of fact the Penguins power play has been off the charts good, converting on 22-for-66 (33.3%) of their man advantage opportunities. Goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury has shown to be deserving of the long term lucrative contract extension he signed in October. He’s gone 11-3 in 14-starts, and has an excellent .930 save percentage.

Final Analysis
These are two of the highest scoring teams in the entire NHL that will go at it tonight. That certainly should prompt a plethora of public wagering action on going on over the total. My personal experiences over the years have led me to believe, if it looks that easy, then it rarely is. I’m going to against the public when making my NHL pick in this game.

The Islanders are coming off an impressive 5-2 win in their previous game over the Tampa Bay Lightning. The Penguins may have been even more impressive during their 4-0 win at Montreal in their last time out. The combination of these two results creates a very nice NHL totals betting system.

Any home team with a total of 5.5, coming off a win by 4-goals or more, versus an opponent coming off a game in which there was 7-goals or more combined being scored, have seen 123 of those 197-games (62.4%) go under the total since 1996.
