Game 1 of Eastern Conference Semifinals at MSG
The Rangers and Capitals will meet for the opening game of the Eastern Conference Semifinals on Thursday at Madison Square Garden in New York. The opening faceoff is slated for 7:35 PM ET. According to the NHL betting odds at GTBets, the Rangers are a -170 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.0. These Metropolitan Division rivals met four times during the regular season, the Rangers were 3-1 in those encounters, and three of the four went over the total.
The Capitals will once again go with Braden Holtby between the pipes in this series opener. Holtby will be making his 79th start of the season, and deeming him as a workhorse would be a vast understatement. He started six of the seven games versus the Islanders during the Capitals quarterfinal series win, and was outstanding with a .943 save percentage. Going under the total has gone 24-14-2 this season in Holtby’s forty starts on the road.
The Rangers Henrik Lundqvist has established himself as one of the best goaltenders in the world during recent years. “Sir Henrik” was 2-0 versus the Capitals this season with a stellar .929 save percentage. Lundqvist started all five games in the Rangers quarterfinal series win over Pittsburgh and posted a stellar .939 save percentage.
The Washington Capitals went under the total in five of the seven games versus the Islanders during their prior playoff series. They held the high scoring Islanders to just one goal in three of the final four games of the series. On a negative note, Washington scored two goals or less in five of their seven 2015 Stanley Cup Playoff games.
The New York Rangers held Pittsburgh to only one goal in each of their final three games of their quarterfinal series. As a matter of fact, the Penguins scored just eight goals combined in five games, and were held to 25 shots on goal or less in four of the five. “The Blue Shirts” have seen four of their five played during this postseason go under the total.
NHL Betting System
Including the playoffs, the New York Rangers are averaging 3.0 goals per game this season. They’re also coming off two straight wins with each coming by one goal. The combination of this data falls into a very profitable betting system on the total, and that’s the direction I’m going when making my NHL picks for Thursday.
Any home team that averages 3.0 or more goals per game, and is coming off a pair of one goal wins, resulted in that home team going under the total in 96 of those 142-games (67.6%) since 1996.
NHL Picks: Capitals and Rangers to go under the total of 5.5 at GTBets.
