Ovechkin Leads Caps past the Islanders
The Washington Capitals just keep winning and they did so again behind solid offense and Braden Holtby in goal. Alex Ovechkin had a goal in the win inched ever closer to his 500th of his career as he now has 497 for his career. This year it was his 22nd so far, which leads the team. Also getting in the act for the Caps was Jason Chimera (12th), Nate Schmidt (2nd) and Nicklas Backstrom (12th), who also had an assist in the game. This is a very deep offensive team that has seven players scoring in double digits. Overall the Caps are 2nd in the league in scoring at 3.2 gpg, while also ranking 2nd in power play conversions (25.4%).

Well it’s no shock as to who grabbed the win in this game. Yep it’s Braden Holtby, who made 34 stops to pick up his 26th win of the year, while lowering his GAA slightly to 1.90 on the year. He should get the start here a well and is 12-4 with a 1.95 GAA on the road, while vs the Rangers he is 4-8 with a 2.61 GAA in his career. Holtby is the main reason that the Caps check in at 2nd in the league in goals allowed, giving up just 2.1 gpg, while allowing teams to convert on just 15.5% of their power play chances, which is 6th in the league.

Rangers Blast Slumping Stars
The Dallas Stars may be the best team in the West, but right now they are struggling some, especially on the road and the Rangers took advantage of that with a big 6-2 win on Tuesday night. The Rangers were led by Derek Stepan, who scored his 7th and 8th goals of the year, while Rick Nash had three assists in the win. Getting the six goals was big for a Rangers team that had just been shutout vs Florida. The Rangers have been a strong offensive team this year as they come in ranked 4th in scoring, putting up 2.9 gpg, while converting on 19.3% of their power play chances, which is 12th in the league.

Grabbing the win for the Rangers was Henrik Lundqvist, who had really been scuffling of late. Prior to this game he has just 3-5 in his last nine starts and has allowed 32 goals over that stretch. He has now gone 18-14 on the year with a 2.49 GAA, while at home he is 12-4 with a 2.18 GAA and vs the Caps in his career he has gone 19-12 with a 2.81 GAA. The Rangers have had their issues on defense of late and they come in at 13th in goals allowed, giving up 2.6 gpg and 15th on the penalty kill, allowing teams to convert on 19.5% of their power play chances. Let's check the latest trends & the NHL odds.

Washington Trends:
The Over is 5-1-2 in their last eight vs. Metropolitan
Over is 4-1-1 in their last five games playing on one days rest

New York Trends:
The Over is 9-1-1 in their last 11 overall
The Over is 5-0 in their last five vs. a team with a winning percentage above .600

Betting Analysis
I look for plenty of goals to be scored here as the NHL pick. Yes Braden Holtby will get the start, but the Rangers are very solid on offense and they should be good for a few here. The Caps off is also very strong and the Rangers have had a ton of issues stopping teams from scoring of late. This one should be wild and it should see at least seven goals being scored.
