The Penguins will host the Capitals on Tuesday at the Consol Energy Center in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with the opening face-off slated for 7:35 PM ET. The game will be televised nationally in the United States by the NBC Sports Network. Who should we be backing for our NHL picks here?

According to NHL betting odds Pittsburgh is a -200 money line home favorite and the posted total is 5.5. This will be a rematch of last night's game that saw the Penguins prevail 3-2 as a -130 money line road favorite. It marked the 7th consecutive win by Pittsburgh over Washington, with 4 of those wins coming by 1-goal. The game also went under the total of 5.5, and the teams have now seen 10 of their last 14 meetings stay on the low side of the number. The Penguins were able to recapture the top spot in the Eastern Conference as a result of last night's win, and improved their lead atop the Metropolitan Division to 16-points over 2nd place New York Rangers. The Capitals remain 5th in the Metropolitan, and 10th overall in Eastern Conference. Washington is just 1-point behind both Columbus and Detroit for the final playoff position in the East.

Playing with No Rest

Both teams enter tonight playing with no rest, and the Capitals will also be playing their 3rd game in the last 4-days. The Capitals are 1-4 in their last 5-games when playing with no rest. Washington has gone over the total in just 4 of their last 14-games when playing with no rest. The Capitals have gone under the total in 4 of their last 5-games in the back end of a home-and-home scenario.

The Penguins are a perfect 6-0 in their last 6-games when playing with no rest. Pittsburgh is an extremely profitable 24-9 in their last 33-games in the back end of a home-and-home situation, and have also gone under the total in just 1 of their last 7 in that exact scenario.

Home and Away Splits

The Capitals are 5-11 in their last 16 road games. Washington has gone over the total in 6 of their last 7 away games. They've gone a dismal 5-17 against the money line in their last 22 road games versus an opponent with a home winning percentage of .600 or better.

The Penguins are an outstanding 43-11 versus the money line in their last 54 home games. Pittsburgh has gone over the total in 9 of their last 11 at the Consol Energy Center.

Within the Division

Washington has really struggled within their own division. The Capitals have gone a dismal 1-10 in their last 11-games versus Metropolitan Division opponents.

Pittsburgh have had better luck than Washington inside the division. They've gone a superb 18-6 in their last 24-games versus Metropolitan Division opponents, and have gone over the total in 4 of the last 5 in division games.

Final Analysis

These two heated rivals will produce a highly intense game in light of the fact they just faced each other last night. I look for power play chances to be plentiful as a result. These are the top 2-teams in the NHL on the power play this season. Pittsburgh is the best in that category converting on 25.6% of their opportunities, while Washington is next best at 23.2%. I'm predicting a high scoring game tonight for our hockey picks with several contributing factors leading me to that conclusion.

NHL Pick: Washington/Pittsburgh to go over the total of 5.5
