Capitals are clearly the favorite team for NHL Picks. Who could possibly challenge them? Let's break down all the potential candidates and their future odds.

The President's Trophy is awarded to the team who has the most points in the NHL's regular season. You would think that this would be a direct reflection of a bunch of teams going on to win the Stanley Cup but its not which is why why we must beware when backing the Washington Capitals as our NHL pick, the presumed President's Cup winner, with a future's ticket. Since 1985, when the trophy was created, only eight teams have won both the Presidents Cup and the Stanley Cup.  That's eight of 31. Eleven of the those have been eliminated in the first two rounds.  Here's a look at the potential Stanley Cup Champions by their current NHL odds boards and where they rank in my power poll.

Washington Capitals +325 Ranked 1st
The Capitals are the clear favorite to win the 2016 Stanley Cup but the reason most President's Cup winners don't fare well in the playoffs is there is already a sense of accomplishment.  They feel they have already won something and it's extremely difficult to bring their game up to another level.  The playoff intensity is a diffrent game compared to the regular season.  You must have a team that is built on will and determination.  It's alot easier to be the team chasing the target than the one who wears it.  The only reason why I think this team is different is their ability to play defense.  They currently have the best goals against in the league allowing just 2.29 goals per game.

Chicago Blackhawks +650 Ranked 2nd
The Blackhawks pedigree is diffcult to forget but I can't stop thinking about how the Dallas Stars handled the Hawks at the United Center. There is no one in the league that I have more confidence in to shut down opposing teams more than Corey Crawford. Corey is fourth in the league in save percentage (.928), 1st in shutouts (7), and second in wins (32). He also has two Cups to his name.  Goaltending will carry the Hawks far but not past Dallas.

Florida Panthers +1500 Ranked 3rd
The Panthers represent tremendous value at +1500.  I would like for them to generate some more scoring chances but perhaps a deal at the trade deadline will help.  This is the type of team the Capitals will take lightly.  I like the Panthers to represent the East in the finals.

Dallas Stars +750 Ranked 4th
The Stars are my pick to win the Stanley Cup.  They made a huge statement against the Chicago Blackhawks  a couple weeks ago when they beat them 4-2 at United Center after being humuliated at home, 5-1, a few days earlier.  Shows playoff grit.

New York Rangers  +1500 Ranked 5th
The Rangers certainly have enough offense to go far in the playoffs but I question their toughness and who knows when Rick Nash will return.

These are my top five at it sits now.  Check out today's videos for a more indepth discussion along with some other possible surprises. @DanaLaneSports
