Russia IOC vs. Germany - Gold Medal

Free Olympic Pick: Russia IOC - 2 ½ (-120)

Best Line Offered: at 5Dimes

This year the NHL refused to allow their players into the Olympic tournament which turned potential powerhouses like Team USA and Canada into shadows of their former selves. That paved the way for the Russians to pluck the best of their talented KHL league and ascend to the top of the Olympic mountain.

But before they claim the summit as their own, there is one team standing between them and Olympic gold. That obstacle is an upstart German team that barely eked out of the qualifying round but has flourished in the elimination games. After the round robin games Germany actually had a -3 goal differential and garnered just two points with a pair of losses and one overtime win that propelled them into the elimination round. This is a team with just three players on their roster with NHL experience and was slated as an also-ran before the tournament began.

Before we allow our heart and not our mind to dictate our Olympic picks we must be cognizant of the fact that the Russians are far and away the superior team in this matchup. After a glance at the Olympic odds we can see that the money line in this matchup is Russia -870 with a return of +585 on Germany. As much as I would personally love this Cinderella team to capture gold and not turn into a pumpkin, I can't envision them defeating the best team in the tournament but won't be a fool and risk -870 on anything, let alone Olympic hockey.

That leaves us with the puck lines and my gut feeling is that this will be a runaway for the Hammer and Sickle. Germany has already won their gold medal after defeating Canada, a team in which they owned a 1-27-1 record against. That is not a misprint. Suffice it to say that Germany could be headed for a huge letdown but they know that a silver medal is as good as gold after the run they have had. Let's back the Russians and lay 2 ½ goals as we predict this will be over after the second period with no let-up from the favorites in the third period. Go red and cash green.
