The New York Rangers made it all the way to the Stanley Cup final last season but lost. They begin their quest to take it one step further versus a team that’s just trying to make it there. The St. Louis Blues are a -150 favorite on the NHL odds in this contest.

The New York Rangers Can Win Because…
They have Henrik Lundqvist. He’s pretty much the reason they are competitive any night. The Rangers star goaltender went 33-24-5 last season with a 2.36 goals-against average. That’s pretty good.

Many people forget that the New York Rangers were actually the fourth-best road team in the NHL last season and are a much better team away from home than at Madison Square Garden. They were only 20-21 at home compared to 25-16 on the road. The St. Louis Blues should be favored but this line isn’t taking into account that the Rangers are one of the league’s better road teams. That presents some good value for bettors.

The St. Louis Blues Can Win Because…
This is a great matchup for them. When selecting your NHL picks keep in mind the Blues are every bit as good as the Rangers defensively but their offense gives them the edge. For all of the Blues scoring woes in the playoffs last season, this is a team that finished seventh in goals scored (248). In the offseason, they added some more firepower with guys like Paul Stastny.

The Blues want to take that next step and become a Stanley Cup contender and they’ll use this game as a measuring stick. It will be important to them. They are 17-8 in their last 25 when at home with a total of 5.5. Look for a very complete effort as they get the job done.

Outlook & Pick
The line opened at St. Louis -160 but those NHL odds are a bit high, which is why we’ve seen it drop into the -150 range. There’s no question that the Blues are the better team here and should have an edge with home-ice advantage, but the Rangers tend to play better on the road than at home. The Blues have won seven of the last eight meetings – and three in a row – but -150 is still a bit too expensive. Instead, I’ll look for an under as both sides are quality defensive teams.

NHL Pick: Under 5.5 at Pinnacle
