Our resident NHL betting odds guru examines the Eastern Conference matchup tonight between Toronto/Ottawa. Read this informative NHL betting preview article which culminates with a free pick on the total.

Battle of Ontario on Sunday
The Senators play host to the Maple Leafs tonight at the Canadian Tire Centre in Ottawa with a scheduled 6:05 PM ET start. According to the NHL odds at 5Dimes, Ottawa is a -130 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. Toronto has gone 6-1 in their last 7-games versus Ottawa. These teams have seen just 5 of the last 23-games at the Canadian Tire Centre go over the total.

Rescheduled Game
In case you’re looking for this game on your rotation schedule, it won’t be there. This is a makeup date for the game originally slated on 10/22, and was postponed due to shooting that took place in Ottawa earlier that day. Both of these clubs played last night with the Maple Leafs defeating the Rangers 5-4 at the Air Canada Centre in Toronto, and Ottawa losing at home in a 2-1 overtime shootout at the hands of the Winnipeg Jets. Neither team has fared very well recently when having to play with no rest. The Maple Leafs have gone 4-10 in their last 14 versus the money line in that role, and the Senators went 5-12 in the last 17 when playing their 2nd game in as many days.

Better than Advertised on the Road
Despite Toronto going just 3-3 against the money line on the road so far, they’ve performed better than that record may indicate. They’ve lost just 1 of their 6 road games in regulation time, and that came last Tuesday in a 3-2 defeat in Phoenix versus the Arizona Coyotes. As I alluded to earlier the Leafs come off a win last night. Toronto has gone under the total in their last 6-games this season following a win. James Reimer will most likely be in goal tonight for the Leafs, and he’s gone 3-2 in his 5-starts this season with a stellar .923 save percentage, and 4 of those 5-games went under the total.

Home Stand Concluding Tonight
This will be the finale of a 4-game in 6-day home stand for the Ottawa Senators.  They’ve seen each of the first 3-games stay under the total, and allowed just 2-goals combined in regulation time during that stretch. Although the Senators are just 4-3 versus the money line at home, all 3 losses came in overtime. They’re 7th best in the NHL allowing only 2.1 goals per game. Craig Andersen was in goal last night for the Senators, and in all likelihood Michael Hutchinson will be between the pipes today. Hutchinson has performed very well in 3-appearances this season, posting a 1.80 GAA, and compiling a terrific .943 save percentage.

Final Analysis
These will be two tired hockey clubs that will take the ice today. Both will be playing their second game in less than 24-hours, in addition to the 3rd in the last 4-days, and the 4th in the last 6-days. I’m calling for a low scoring game, and for that reason I will be advising a NHL pick on the total in this one.
