Our resident NHL capper examines tonight’s game between the Canadiens/Canucks. Take the time to read this revealing NHL handicapping preview article that concludes with a free pick on the total.

Eastern versus Western Canada
The Canucks will play host to the Canadiens this evening at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver with the opening puck drop slated for 10:05 PM ET. According to the NHL odds at SBR Sportsbook, the Canucks are a -135 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.0. These teams met twice a season ago, and the Canadiens won both games in relatively easy fashion by a cumulative score of 9-3.

Playing Down Under
This will be the finale of a 3-game in 4-day Western Canadian road trip for the Montreal Canadiens. They opened the trip on Monday with a surprising 3-0 loss to the Edmonton Oilers, and followed that up with a 2-1 overtime win at Calgary the next night. Montreal has now seen each of their last 5-games go under the total, and they’ve allowed an average of just 1.6 goals per contest during that time. Carey Price is slated to be in goal tonight for Montreal, and as expected, he’s been solid in 8-starts by going 7-1 with a .923 save percentage. Montreal is currently on top of the Eastern Conference standings with 16-points, and has gone 8-2 in their first 10-games.

Encouraging Start to the Year
The Vancouver Canucks have got off to a nice start to the season by winning 6 of their first 9-games. Their 12-points are currently 5th best in the Western Conference. Tonight will be the finale of a 3-game in 5-day home stand for the Canucks. They’ve won each of the first 2-games of the home stand by defeating Washington 4-2 and Carolina 4-1. The Canucks have scored 3-goals or more in 7 of their first 9, and have yet to be held to less than 2-goals in any of those games. Ryan Miller is starting to settle in with his new club going 6-1 in 7-starts and compiling a respectable .916 save percentage. A real oddity for the Canucks has been that in each of their 6-wins, they scored an empty net goal.

Final Analysis
The Canucks have held each of their past 2-opponents to 2-goals or less, and the Canadiens are coming off an overtime win. These 3 results create a strong NHL totals betting system for tonight’s game, and it was a key factor in making my NHL picks for today. Any home team with a total of 5.0 or less that’s held each of their previous 2-opponents to 2-goals or less, and is facing an opponent coming off an overtime win, has seen 35 of those 46-games (76.1%) go under the total during the past 5-seasons.
