The Flames will host the Ducks on Wednesday at the Scotiabank Saddledome in Calgary, Alberta, Canada with the opening face-off slated for 10:05 PM ET.

Anaheim Ducks vs. Calgary Flames

According to NHL betting odds Anaheim is a -175 money line road favorite and the posted total is 5.5. Anaheim has won 20 of their last 28-games versus Calgary. However, the Flames have won 15 of their last 22 at home versus the Ducks. Anaheim is currently 1st in the Pacific Division, and they’re 2nd overall in the Western Conference. Calgary is 6th in the Pacific, and 14th overall in the Western Conference.

Feeling the Late Season Heat

The Anaheim Ducks had been atop the Western Conference Standings for the majority of the season only to see the St. Louis Blues surpass them in the last week. In addition, the Ducks once seemingly comfortable lead in the Pacific Division has also gone by the wayside, and they now hold just a slim 2-point lead over the 2nd place San Jose Sharks. Anaheim enters tonight having lost 3 in a row and 6 of their last 9-games. What’s been even more alarming is that the recent 3-game skid has all transpired on home ice where they had been dominant. Tonight will be the 1st of a 3-game in 4-day road trip for the Ducks. Anaheim has been a very good 19-12 versus the money line on the road this season. With the other 2-games on this road swing versus very good teams in Colorado and Los Angeles, a win versus a Calgary team that’s been all but eliminated from playoff contention is imperative. They can ill afford at this point to not beat the teams they’re suppose to if they’re to win the Pacific, and have a chance of finishing atop the Western Conference.

Playing out the String

With 17-games left in the regular season, and 17-points out of a playoff spot, the Flames are all but eliminated from the postseason. As a matter of fact, the Edmonton Oilers who’ve been the bottom feeder in the Western Conference for the majority of the season has crept to with 3-points of the Flames. Calgary had built a bit of momentum winning 6 of their last 8-games prior to the Olympic break. Unfortunately since resuming play after the break they’ve gone just 3-4 including losing their last 2. On a more positive note, the Flames have gone 7-2 versus the money line in their last 69 home games.

Final Analysis

These are the toughest games to find any type of value in. We have one team (Calgary) with nothing to play for, versus an opponent (Anaheim) with a lot on the line. Yet, it’s extremely difficult to lay this type of money line juice on a struggling road favorite, versus an inferior opponent that’s recently played well at home. I have the slightest of leans on this game going over the total tonight.
