The annual NHL All Star Game takes place today in Columbus, Ohio. Our NHL consultant provides us with a preview article on this contest, and his primary focus will be on the total.

NHL All Star Game Total
The NHL All-Star Game takes place today in Columbus, Ohio with the opening faceoff slated for 5:05 PM ET. This year’s format involved a draft of the players chosen for the game, and each side was selected by designated captains Jonathan Toews and Nick Foligno. My area of concentration in this article will be on the total. According to the NHL odds at the posted total is 21.0. If you choose to go over the total it will come at a cost of $1.25 to win a $1.00, and going under the number would be in an increment of wagering a $1.00 to make $1.05.

The Total
The last five NHL All Star games have produced scores of 12-9, 11-10, 12-11, 8-7, and 12-9. That’s an average of 20.2 goals combined scored per game. Needless to say, the attention given to defensive details in these contests have historically been null and void. The games have been a wide open and entertaining brand of hockey. There’s been very little if any body checking that has occurred. There’s no reason to believe anything will change in those regards today. However, it becomes a very difficult conundrum in regards to picking a total. When considering going over the number, the major sportsbooks have really pushed the envelope with this total of 21.0 on their . Basically one low scoring period can virtually put you in a very disadvantageous position. Contrarily, wagering on the under in a wide open affair such as this game promises to be, involving the most offensively gifted players in the world, may be the easiest path to an onset of a stomach ulcer.

Final Analysis
Wagering big on an all-star game in any sport is definitively a sure sign that there will be some psychological consoling taking place in your near future. With all due respect to those who do wager on these games, my advice is to exercise your highest degree of caution, and stay conservative. I’m going to have an extremely small lean toward going under the total in this contest when making one of my NHL picks today.
