The Ottawa Senators and Chicago Blackhawks have both started the season fairly well. The Blackhawks are 4-2-1 while the Sens are 4-1-1. The Blackhawks have cooled off recently, though, and will try to cash in as a big Sunday favorite on the NHL betting odds.

The Ottawa Senators Can Win Because…
Their defense and goaltending has been stellar. The Senators have been playing well with nine points in just six games. They have allowed a total of just 10 goals in their last five games. Goaltender Craig Anderson is 5-1-2 in his career against the Blackhawks, so that indicates Ottawa should have a better shot at winning than the line suggests.

On the flip side, you’ve got a Blackhawks team that has lost two straight and three of five. As a matter of fact, some might say this team is a tad overrated as two of their four wins have come in overtime and those could be 50/50 situations. In other words, the Blackhawks record indicates they are better than what they are. When you factor that they lost at home to Calgary on October 15th while laying nearly -250, it really gives you pause about laying this number with the Blackhawks.

The Chicago Blackhawks Can Win Because…
The Senators haven’t really been tested much this season. Ottawa has played the likes of the Florida Panthers, the Colorado Avalanche and the Columbus Blue Jackets. They only have one win this season that has come by more than a goal, so it’s not as if they’re blowing anyone out. Going on the road to face Chicago is going to be a whole other animal completely.

Chicago is tough to beat at home as evidenced by their 3-0-1 record at the United Center. On top of that, the Sens have dropped five straight visits to the United Center. This should be a tight, low-scoring game, so you’d rather go with the team that has the much better offense and home crowd on their side. That’s why you should take the Blackhawks with your NHL picks.

Outlook & Pick
The Blackhawks are laying a huge number on the NHL odds here but it’s a little out of hand. The price is probably right at about -200 given the home-ice advantage but the Senators have played well and can steal this win. Also, keep in mind that the Blackhawks will be starting rookie Scott Darling between the pipes as Corey Crawford is out and Antti Raanta has started three straight. Laying this type of number with a rookie starter in net has to make any better nervous.

Instead, have a look at the total. This is a matchup of two of the better defensive teams in the NHL right now. Both teams have only allowed 13 goals so far, which is tied for the third-least in the league. The goaltending on both sides has been very reliable. That being the case, go with the under here.

NHL Pick: Under 5.5 at Bodog
