A battle of two of the original six NHL teams takes place on Friday when the Red Wings and Leafs square off. SBR contributor Ross Benjamin gives us his NHL betting preview on this game and it includes a free pick on the total.

Old Time Hockey Wings/Leafs
The Maple Leafs will host the Red Wings on Friday at the Air Canada Centre with the opening face-off is slated for 7:35 PM ET. According to NHL odds, the Maple Leafs are a -125 money line favorite and the posted total is 5.5. These teams have seen just 1 of their last 7 meeting go under the total, and none of the last 4 at Toronto has played on the low side of the number.

Red Wings Struggling Offensively
The Detroit Red Wings began the season by losing 2 of their first 3-games, and scored just a combined 6-goals in doing so. They’re coming off a 3-2 overtime shootout loss versus Boston on Wednesday. Detroit can thank goaltender Jimmy Howard for at least being able to earn 1-point in the standings. Howard made 37-saves while Boston outshot Detroit by a decisive 39-20 margin. Howard is listed as the probable starter on Friday. He’s started each of the first 4-games this season for Detroit, posting a stellar 1.95 GAA, and a very good .920 save percentage. Detroit hasn’t seen any of their first 3-games go over the total.

Hoping to keep the Momentum
Toronto dropped their first 2-games of the season, and has since bounced back to win the last 2. James Reimer made his first start in goal on Tuesday at home versus Colorado, and he rewarded the coaching staff by stopping 22 of 24-shots on goal during a 3-2 overtime shootout win. Contrary to tonight’s opponent, the Leafs haven’t struggled offensively, scoring 14-goals through the first 4-games.

Final Analysis
When making your NHL picks consider that the usually conservative Red Wings have shown a willingness to open the game up in their recent meetings with Toronto. The Leafs style is simple, play wide open, and cash in on more of your chances than your opponent does. I like this one to play on the high side of the number.
