The Canadiens host the Panthers at the Belle Centre in Montreal, Quebec, Canada. Find out where we believe the best value lies for Sunday's matchup!

According to NHL betting odds the Canadiens are a -200 money line home favorite and the posted total is 5.0. These two clubs have seen just 6 of their last 27 meetings at Montreal go over the total. These teams have seen just 2 of their last 14 head-to-head clashes go over the total.

Panthers on the Prowl

The Florida Panthers have won their last 2 and 4 of their last 5-games overall. They come off a 3-2 overtime shootout win at home versus the Washington Capitals on Friday night. Florida entered the weekend 7th in the 8-team Atlantic Division, and 14th overall in the Eastern Conference. On a positive side they still have 49 regular season games left to play, and are just 6-points behind the Carolina Panthers for the 8th and final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference. Today will be the first of a 4-game in 6-day road trip for the Panthers. Florida is a miserable 4-12 versus the money line on the road this season.

Inside the Panthers Numbers

  • The Panthers are a dismal 14-39 versus the money line in their last 53 road games.
  • The Panthers are 20-45 in their last 65-games versus an opponent with a winning record.
  • The Panthers are 22-49 versus the money line in their last 71-games overall.
  • The Panthers have gone over the total in just 16 of their last 57-games versus an opponent with a winning record.
  • The Panthers have stayed under the total in just 1 of their last 7 road games versus an opponent with a winning home record.
  • The Panthers are 28th in the NHL averaging a paltry 2.2 goals per game.
  • The Panthers are 29th in the NHL on the power play converting on just 10.8% of his chances.
  • The Panthers are 27th in the NHL allowing 3.2 goals per game.
  • The Panthers are 2th in the NHL with their penalty killing at a horrible 74.0%.

Trying to Regain the Momentum

The Montreal Canadiens entered the weekend on a 2-game losing streak. At the time of this writing their road game versus the New York Islanders on Saturday wasn’t completed. Prior to their recent 2-game losing streak they had won 5 in a row, and 9 of their last 10-games. This will be the Canadiens 3rd in 4, and their 4th game in 6-days. Entering Saturday the Canadiens were 2nd in the 8-team Metropolitan Division, and are 5-points behind the 1st place Boston Bruins. They were also 3rd overall in the Eastern Conference.

Inside the Canadiens Numbers

  • The Canadiens are 3rd in the NHL allowing just 2.1 goals per game.
  • The Canadiens are 6th in the NHL on both the power play (21.7%), and their penalty killing (86.1%).
  • The Canadiens are a perfect 6-0 in their last 6 when playing their 3rd game in 4-days.
  • The Canadiens are 4-0 in their last 4 when playing their 4th game in 6-days.
  • The Canadiens are 13-3 in their last 16-games when playing with no rest.
  • The Canadiens are 6-0 in their last 6 home games versus an opponent with a less than .400 money line winning percentage on the road.
  • The Canadiens have gone over the total in just 1 of their last 10 home games when playing with no rest.
  • The Canadiens have gone over the total in just 8 of their last 32-games versus an Eastern Conference opponent.

Final Analysis

With all of Montreal’s recent success when playing in situations where they have little or no rest, it would be difficult to fade them just on that fact alone. The Panthers have been playing much better of late, but they still have been very erratic on the road. I never would lay -200 on any money-line favorite. With all things considered, I have the smallest of leans toward a low scoring game for my NHL picks.

NHL Pick: Florida/Montreal to go under the total of 5.0
