Two teams that are nosediving in a big way will meet up in this Monday contest. The Toronto Maple Leafs have 16 of their last 24 games while the New York Rangers have dropped six of eight. By all accounts, this should be a fairly even matchup. The question for handicappers is to figure out who can do a better job of putting it together.
The Toronto Maple Leafs can win because…
New York really sucks right now. The Rangers are playing a franchise- record nine-game homestand and so far, that’s produced just two win in seven games. The Rangers aren’t even getting reliable goaltending, which is what they’re supposed to be known for as Henrik Lundqvist has been very mediocre. In the month of December, he’s registered two wins in eight starts while posting a horrendous 3.41 GAA and a startling .874 save percentage. That alone should give you reason to consider the Leafs for your NHL picks.
The New York Rangers can win because…
Toronto just can’t win these days…period. The Leafs started the year 10-4-0 but have since lost 18 of 24. While the goaltenders have been decent, the Leafs are allowing more shots on net than any other team in the league and the netminders are breaking down. After giving up just 2.29 goals per game in October, the Leafs allowed 3.00 per game in November and are coughing up 3.36 this month.
Toronto has been a terrible road bet this season as they’ve lost 10 of their last 11 road games. It’s hard to fathom a reason to take them in this spot.
Outlook & Pick
It’s hard to pick a side as the NHL odds are showing the Leafs aren’t worthy of your money but the Rangers have been pathetic at home. The Rangers are also in a back-to-back and playing their third game in four nights.
Take the over with your NHL picks. These two teams have been playing despicable defense and that should lead to a high-scoring affair.
