The Toronto Maple Leafs Can Win Because…

The Red Wings are a sinking ship. They’ve lost five of their last seven games and are struggling in the worst way. They’ve had to deal with injuries all season long and are once again mired by absences. Stars Pavel Datsyuk and Henrik Zetterberg are both out but so are some of the supporting cast, like Tomas Jurco, Joakim Andersson and Todd Bertuzzi. On top of that, goaltender Jimmy Howard has dropped four of five while posting a 2.91 GAA and he hasn’t won in any of his last three starts against Toronto, posting a 2.83 GAA.

Take the Leafs with your NHL picks. They’re at least healthy and competent these days.

The Detroit Red Wings Can Win Because…

The Leafs haven’t been a reliable road bet of late. They’ve only won six of their last 15 road games and so far, have gone 2-2 on this road trip. The fact that this is the final game of their five-game road trip could slow them down as they’ve done a ton of traveling. It started with a west coast swing in San Jose, Anaheim and Los Angeles, then swung east to Washington and now Detroit. Not to mention, this will be their fifth game in eight nights.

The Leafs are also without their No. 1 goaltender in Jonathan Bernier as he’s injured. Backup James Reimer has a career 4.54 GAA against Detroit. That fact alone makes the Red Wings an enticing bet on the NHL odds.

Outlook & Pick

The Red Wings are not a good team right now and they’re dealing with a ton of injuries. The latter point is what is really slowing them down. Toronto could be worn out as their road trip winds down, but they’re worth a small play since they’re getting money in this spot.
