The Tampa Bay Lightning and Carolina Hurricanes might have very different positions in the standings but this could be a very even matchup on Tuesday. That’s because both teams have been playing well of late. The Lightning are a road favorite on the NHL betting lines here.

The Tampa Bay Lightning Can Win Because…
They dominate this series. The Lightning have won nine of the last 10 meetings between the teams while outscoring the Hurricanes 35-14. Goaltender Ben Bishop is a perfect 5-0-0 versus the Canes while posting a sparkling 1.19 GAA in the process. This is simply a matchup that doesn’t suit the Hurricanes very well.

The Lightning come into this game on a roll as they’ve won 10 of their last 13 games. They have been playing great at both ends of the ice here as they have allowed two goals or less in nine of the 10 wins in that streak. They have also scored three goals or more in eight of those 10 wins.

This is a tough team to beat nowadays and the Hurricanes are going to find that out on Tuesday.

The Carolina Hurricanes Can Win Because…
They are playing their best hockey of the season. Carolina has won six of nine, which is quite impressive considering they had only won 10 times in their first 37 games. They’ve morphed into one of the league’s better defensive teams, giving up just 2.11 goals per game in January. That’s the seventh-best number this month. One of the main reasons for that is they’ve cut down on their shots allowed per game. They are giving up just 26.6 per game, which is the fifth-best number.

It’ll be interesting to see who is in net for the Hurricanes as both Cam Ward and Anton Khudobin have played well. Khudobin has started the team’s last two wins and has won five straight starts while giving up just seven goals in the process.

As good as Tampa Bay has been this year, this is still a team that’s under .500 on the road (11-13). And Ben Bishop has an .890 save percentage and 2.94 GAA in away games, so this team is vulnerable when they’re away from home. Don’t be surprised if Carolina gives the Lightning a run for their money here.

Outlook
The average combined score in the last 10 meetings is 4.9 goals per game, so the total of 5.5 on the NHL odds definitely tempts us to take the under. Combined with the fact that the Hurricanes are playing well defensively as are the Lightning, and it makes sense to go under the number. Bishop plays particularly well in this series and the Cans have just 14 goals in the last 10 meetings.

Picking a side seems tricky as the Lightning are laying a bunch of juice here but are facing a team that has been playing well. They should win but it’s a closer matchup than most people might expect. That being the case, under is the best NHL pick here.
