The Toronto Maple Leafs and New York Islanders will be back in action on Thursday night after enjoying a long Olympic break. The time off wasn’t kind to the Islanders as they watched franchise star and leading scorer John Tavares get injured while playing for Team Canada. He’s now out for the season, leaving the lousy Isles in even worse shape.

The Toronto Maple Leafs Can Win Because…

The Isles are coming apart at the seams. It’s not that things were going well for them before but now it’s time for them to pack it in. Be very careful using them for your NHL picks.

The Isles have lost seven of their last eight games overall and if they keep this up, they’ll get eliminated from playoff contention very shortly. They coughed up 3.88 goals in that eight-game span and now have to take on a Leafs team that’s very adept at scoring. The Leafs are 11-2-1 in their last 14 and have scored at least three goals in all but two games in that stretch. This is mismatch of teams heading in opposite directions. Take the Leafs with your sports picks.

The New York Islanders Can Win Because….

…is there a good reason? The Isles are struggling, they lost Tavares and they’re about to have a fire sale at the trade deadline. Trading for Thomas Vanek didn’t pan out and he’s as good as gone. That’s on top of the other names that are being bandied about, like defenseman Andrew MacDonald.

It’s just not a good time to be a member of the Isles right now. The team is going to be sold for parts, the head coach is about to be fired and this season is already lost. They don’t have anything to get excited about here.

Outlook & Pick

There’s no way you can take the Isles in this spot. They should be a home dog of at least +130 on the NHL odds before I’d even consider them. As it stands, taking the Leafs at a PICK makes plenty of sense.

Pick: Leafs -109 at Pinnacle
