Last 2014 NHL Season Opener
The New York Islanders and Carolina Hurricanes will open their seasons on Friday at the PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina with the opening face-off slated for 7:05 PM ET. These are the only two teams who’ve yet to play a game in the new season. According to NHL odds, the Islanders are a -120 moneyline road favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. When making your NHL picks keep in mind that since the start of the 2008-2009 NHL campaign, the Hurricanes have gone 16-7 versus the Islanders, and 17 of those 23-games have gone over the total.

Both Teams Eying the Playoffs
Both of these teams failed to qualify for the 2014 Stanley Cup Playoffs. As a matter of fact, the Hurricanes finished 7th, and the Islanders 8th, in the 8-team Metropolitan Division. Both teams struggled on home ice a season ago. The Islanders actually went a very respectable 21-20 on the road last season, and earned 43 of their 79-points for the season during their away games. The Hurricanes were a very disappointing 18-23 on home ice last season, and compiled just 1-point more at home, than they did on the road.

My View on both Teams
The Carolina Hurricanes have some quality forwards in Jeff Skinner, Alexander Semin, Eric Staal, and Jordan Staal. However, there’s unproven scoring beyond those top 4. The defense lacks physicality, and unless Cam Ward can return to the form of a few seasons ago, the goaltending is a big question mark.

The Islanders defense is a major concern heading into the season, populated by castoffs, and reclamation projects. It will be interesting to see how star center Jon Tavares recovers from a season ending knee injury suffered during the 2014 men’s Olympic hockey tournament in Sochi. They should be solid in goal on most nights with Jaroslav Halak and Chad Johnson.

Final Analysis
There’s not a lot to go on this early in the year. The Islanders were able to hold their own on the road last season as I alluded to earlier in the article, and they finished the season by winning 6 of their final 8 away games. They also went a very profitable 12-4 in their last 16 road games versus an Eastern Conference opponent. Despite being a formidable road team, the Islanders were only installed a moneyline favorite in just 2 of their 41-games in that role a season ago, and they’ll match half that total in the 2014-2015 opener. Carolina finished last season by losing 5 of their last 6 at home, including 0-4 in the last 4 versus Eastern Conference opponents. The Hurricanes also saw 20 of 30 home games stay under the total last year when the total was 5.5.
