The Red Wings will host the Flyers tonight, and we have all the NHL betting details on this game in our preview article. The article also contains a very profitable money line underdog angle that will be active for just the 44th time since 1996!

Flyers in Joe Louis Arena
The Red Wings will play host to the Flyers tonight at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit with the opening puck drop slated for 7:35 PM ET. According to the NHL betting odds at 5-Dimes, the Red Wings are a -185 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. Bookmaker shows Detroit -1.5 (+165) and Philadelphia +1.5 (-180) on the puck-line. This will be the 2nd meeting of the season between these teams, and Philadelphia skated away with a 4-2 home win over Detroit on October 25th. The win was the 3rd in a row by the Flyers over the Red Wings dating back to last season. These clubs have also seen 3 of their 4-meeting go over the total since the start of last season.

Cutting the Losses
The Philadelphia Flyers are coming off a 1-0 road loss at the hands of the New York Islanders in their previous game. The loss was the Flyers 5th in the last 6-games, and it dropped their money line record to 8-12 (.400) on the year. Philadelphia enters tonight having lost their last 5 in a row on the road. One of the glaring weaknesses for the Flyers on the road has been their slow starts. They’ve been outscored by a combined 18-7 in the first two periods in away games this season. Tonight’s starting goaltender is slated to be Steve Mason. Despite his 5-8 record in 13-starts, Mason has compiled a very good .923 save percentage. Mason has also seen 5 of his 6-starts on the road go under the total while posting an impressive .931 save percentage.

Adjusting Wings Total
The Detroit Red Wings began the season by not seeing any of their first 6-games go over the total. Since that time, they’ve had just 2 of their next 15-games stay under the total. The Red Wings have seen 14 of their first 21-games have a closing total of 5.0 or less. Tonight will mark just the 8th time in 22-games they’ve seen a total of 5.5. The adjustment is surely do in part to the high scoring nature of Flyers games this season, and also due to the fact that Detroit has scored 3-goals or more in 9 of their last 13-games.

NHL Betting System
Any money line road underdog of +100 to +200 (Flyers) that’s playing in the first half of the season, coming off a 1-goal loss versus a division opponent, and they have a winning percentage of .400 to .490, has gone 27-16 (62.8%) since 1996. This clearly favors the money line road underdog from a betting value perspective, and that’s what I intend on using for one of my NHL picks today.
