Our NHL betting odds expert examines the Eastern Conference contest today between Pittsburgh/Detroit. This NHL betting preview article is loaded with pertinent handicapping information, and culminates with a money line free pick.

NHL Motown Madness
The Red Wings will host the Penguins today at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit with the opening puck drop slated for 7:05 PM ET. According to the NHL betting odds at Bookmaker, Detroit is a -110 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. The Sportsbook Review consensus report indicates that 62% of the money line actions had gone the way of Detroit, and 60% of the totals bets have been made on going over the number. This will be the first meeting between these teams this season, they met twice last year, and each team one once, while both games went over the total.

Short Turnaround for the Penguins
Pittsburgh played last night at home versus their archrival Philadelphia and came up on the short end of a 5-3 final score. This will be the first time the Penguins will be playing with no rest this season. The Penguins have scored 3-golas or more in 4 of their first 5-games, and are averaging a robust 3.8 goals per outing. They’ve also amassed 38-shots on goal or more in 3 of the first 5-games, and average 34.4 shots on net per contest. Pittsburgh is listing Thomas Greiss as their starting goaltender for tonight. Greiss will be making his first start of the season, and has yet to appear in any of the first 5-games.

Offensive Struggles Continue
The Red Wings have endured tough times in finding the back of the net so far this season. They’ve scored just 12-goals combined through the first 6-games. Despite the anemic offensive production, they’ve managed to go 3-3 thus far, and have earned 8 of 12-points possible. Contrary to their struggles offensively, their defensive play, and goaltending has been superb. They allowed only 10-goals against, and none of the first 6-games have gone over the total. Jimmy Howard has been terrific in goal, posting a stellar .937 save percentage in 5-starts. The Red Wings backup goaltender Jonas Gustavsson has made 1-start, and stopped all 30-shots on goal, during a 1-0 win over Toronto. Detroit has yet to yield a power play goal against them, killing off all 18 man advantage opportunities by the opposition.

Final Analysis
This will be just the 2nd road game of the season for Pittsburgh, and it comes on the heels of an intense rivalry game last night. This situation sets up very nicely for the Red Wings, and my lean for one of your NHL picks today goes the way of the home side.
