Our resident NHL consultant examines tonight’s game between Montreal and New Jersey. Join us in reading this insightful NHL betting preview article which culminates with a selection on the total.

NHL Eastern Conference Battle in Jersey
The New Jersey Devils will host the Montreal Canadiens tonight with the opening faceoff slated for 7:05 PM ET. The NHL betting odds at Pinnacle indicates that Montreal is a -130 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.0. This will be the first meeting of the season between these Eastern Conference rivals. The Canadiens took two of three games versus the Devils a season ago.

Suffocating Defensively
The Montreal Canadiens have allowed 1-goal in each of their last 4, and have surrendered 2 or less in all of its previous 8-games. Needless to say, wagering on the under in recent Montreal games has been a profitable venture when making your NHL picks. The Canadiens have gone under the total in each of their previous 5-games, and have gone over the total in just 1 of the last 8. More importantly for Canadiens backers, they’ve won the last 4, and 7 of their last 8-games. This is nothing new for Montreal, they’ve seen just 11 of their first 37-games (29.7%) go over the total. Tonight’s probable starting goaltender Carey Price has been sizzling hot. Price has posted a tremendous .957 save percentage during his previous four starts.

Offensive Futility
The New Jersey Devils have accounted for a total of just 20-goals scored during their previous 13-games. The Devils have seen each of their previous 8-games go under the total. As a matter of fact, New Jersey has gone over the total in only 2 of their last 16-games. It’s certainly no surprise that they’ve had a very difficult time winning games over the past two months. New Jersey has gone an abysmal 7-21 against the money line in their last 28-games.The main victim of the Devils offensive despairs has been tonight’s starting goaltender Cory Schneider. Despite his team’s struggles, Schneider has posted a stellar .918 save percentage in 35-starts this season, and that includes a brilliant .940 in his last 4.

Final Analysis
This matchup has all the earmarks of a low scoring game, and there’s no sense in trying to get to cute in analyzing what may occur otherwise. My lean for one of my NHL picks tonight will be toward this one playing on the low side of the number.

NHL Picks: Play on Montreal and New Jersey to go under the total of 5.0 at Pinnacle.
