The Detroit Red Wings will be wrapping up a four-game home stand on Sunday when the Montreal Canadiens visit. So far, they’ve gone 2-0-1 in their first three contests. They’re a sizable favorite on the NHL betting lines for Sunday’s affair.

The Montreal Canadiens Can Win Because…
They’re on fire right now. Montreal has ripped off five straight wins and has looked fantastic in the process. At the offensive end, they’ve scored at least three goals or more in four of the five games and on the defensive end, they’ve allowed just six goals in the process.

On the year, the Canadians have been fantastic. They’ve won 13 of their 18 games and sit atop of the NHL standings entering Sunday. That’s impressive.

On the other hand, Detroit is so-so. They are 8-3-5 (8-8) on the year and have dropped four of their last six. They are just 5-3 at home, which is decent but not unbeatable. The line is too high here on the wrong team. Take a shot with the Habs.

The Detroit Red Wings Can Win Because…
They’ve played well at home during this home stand. The Red Wings have won two of three with the wins coming against the New Jersey Devils and Chicago Blackhawks. Their only loss came to the Tampa Bay Lightning in a shootout. That’s credible.

As for the Canadiens, they might be a bit of fraud so far. Yes, they are an impressive 13-4-1 so far but the Habs have just a +5 goal differential. To contrast, the New York Islanders are at +4 but are 11-6-0 or the Toronto Maple Leafs are also at +5 yet are 9-7-2. The Habs are just playing in a lot of tight, close games and that could end up catching up with them. They are overrated.

On top of that, the Habs are in a back-to-back situation after playing last night at home to the Philadelphia Flyers while the Red Wings will have more rest. Because of the back-to-back, it’s likely we see Dustin Tokarski in net and he’s definitely a downgrade from Carey Price. Take the Red Wings with your NHL picks.

Outlook
Montreal is the better of the two teams here and while they’re on short rest, they’re still worth a look. Price isn’t likely to be in net, which is why we see the Red Wings as a -150 favorite on the NHL odds in this spot. However, it’s hard to bet against the red-hot Habs right now. They are clicking at both ends of the ice and the price is right – pardon the pun. Tokarski doesn’t scare me off and neither does the Red Wings home-ice advantage. You can get the Habs as high as +132 in some spots and that just seems like a line that’s off. The Red Wings should be favored by about -130 in this spot. Not this high. That being the case, take a flier with the Canadiens on Sunday.
