NHL Picks: OVER 5 (-130)
Best Line Offered: at Heritage

Philadelphia Flyers (18-15-7)
The Philadelphia Flyers are riding a three-game winning streak into Wednesday’s clash with the Boston Bruins, looking to extend their improved form to four in a row for the second time this season. By the NHL odds, it would seem they have a realistic shot to do just that. Flyers are priced at -115 to win straight up, albeit only fractionally advantaged over the visitors Bruins trading at -105 to win SU at bet365.

The Flyers boast a 10-5-4 record at home for the season and, behind their improved form of late, they are 6-3-1 in their last ten games. The winning streak began with a 4-3 win over Montreal, followed by a 4-3 win in OT over Minnesota and was capped on a 4-0 shutout over the Islanders on Saturday.

Two months ago, the Flyers enjoyed a four-game winning streak with wins over Nashville, NY Rangers, Ottawa and New Jersey. Things came undone when they lost seven of their ensuing 13 games and slipped in the rankings towards the New Year.

Since beating Montreal, however, the Flyers are suddenly flying. Offense has picked up considerably and even defensively they’re playing much better. The Flyers are averaging 2.3 goals per game so far this season but in their last three games they upped that average to 4 goals per game.

Boston Bruins (21-15-5)
The Boston Bruins are riding a two-game losing streak into Wednesday’s clash with the soaring Flyers and boast an even more concerning 3-6-1 record in their last ten games. That’s not the sort of form that bodes well for the Bruins as they prepare to face of a team that appears to have found its mojo.

Of course, the Bruins could find their form at any given moment. On the season, the Bruins are third in the league for scoring with a 3-goal average and 18th on goals allowed with 2.7-goals on average. They are the first in the league for Power Play PCT at 28.1 They are also 7th in the league on the penalty kill.

Most recently, the Bruins have gone 1-2 on the road with a 4-1 win in New Jersey Devils followed by a 2-1 OT loss to Ottawa Senators and a 2-1 loss to the NY Rangers.

Earlier this season, the Bruins lost to the Flyers 5-4 in OT at home. Wednesday’s clash marks the second meeting of the season between this pair with a third scheduled a few weeks on (January 25 in Philadelphia).

The Bruins have struggled at home this season with a 9-11-2 mark but on the road they are a solid 12-4-3. They also have won eight of their last ten games at Wells Fargo Center in Philadelphia.

NHL Betting Verdict
The Flyers and Bruins are clearly enjoying contrasting fortunes at the moment but the NHL betting line is rather tight nevertheless. That suggests it’s going to be a close game and the winner is a tossup. The Flyers could very well extend their positive run of form to four straight while the Bruins could start a bounce back to form with a road win in Philly.

Seeing how close the NHL odds are and the realistic shot both teams have to win this game, we’re passing on the SU win on our NHL picks. Instead, we’re looking at the total running for this game, which is set to 5.5 with the OVER trading, somewhat surprisingly, at +135. If the Flyers offense continues it’s free-scoring ways (4 goals per game in the last three) and the Bruins find the form that saw them climb to third in the league for scoring, this could be a right shootout. Heck, the last meeting resulted in nine goals. Take the OVER 5.5 on your NHL picks.
