Vancouver and Colorado will meet tonight as the final few days of the regular season winds down. Our resident NHL picks expert breaks down the teams in this contest, and provides a NHL free pick as well.

Battle of West
The Canucks will host the Avalanche on Thursday at the Rogers Arena in Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada with the opening face-off at 10:05 PM ET. According to NHL betting odds Colorado is a -125 money line road favorite and the posted total is 5.5. Vancouver has gone 22-6 in their last 28-games versus Colorado, including 11-1 in the last 12 at home. These teams have seen just 1 of their last 10 meetings go over the total.

Head Roll in Vancouver
The Vancouver Canucks were officially eliminated from the playoffs following a 3-0 home loss to Anaheim on Monday. It didn’t take long for the Canucks management to start shaking things up with the firing of General Manager Mike Gillis on Wednesday. They followed that dismissal with the hiring of long time Canucks player Trevor Linden. The latter was appointed to President of Hockey Operations. Linden will be expected to take his vast leadership skills that he exhibited for many years on the ice, and carry that over to his front office position. The question mark at this point is whether head coach John Tortorella will be retained.

Recent Stretch Typifies Disappointing Season
Tonight will be the finale of a 5-game in 13-day home stand for a Canucks team that held onto hope that they could use this stretch to catapult themselves back into the playoff picture. Well it’s been quite the contrary, as Vancouver has gone a dismal 1-3 in the first 4-games of the home stand, and has been eliminated from the postseason. The Canucks have now gone under the total in 4 of their last 5-games, and have scored 2-goals or less in each of those games. The Canucks have seen just 13 of their 39 home games go over the total this season.

Strong Late Season Surge
The Colorado Avalanche has gone 7-1 versus the money line, and has earned at least 1-point in each of their previous 8-games. This late season surge has closed them to within 2-points of St. Louis for the lead in the Central Division, while also narrowing the gap to 3-points behind Anaheim for 1st overall in the Western Conference, and the Avalanche has 1-game in hand on the Ducks. Colorado is coming off a 4-1 road win at Edmonton on Wednesday. That was was the 1st of a 4-game in 6-day road trip to conclude the regular season for Colorado. Following tonight they will play at San Jose tomorrow and at Anaheim on Sunday. In order for the Avalanche to overtake either the Blues, or the Ducks, they’ll have certainly earned it considering the tough slate in front of them.

NHL Betting System
Any home team with a total of 5.5 that’s gone under the total in their last 2 or more games in a row, versus an opponent that’s gone under the total in their previous 4- or more games in a row, has seen 40 of those 53-games (75.5%) go under the total during the last 18 seasons. Bet this affair to go under the total for your NHL picks.
