It’s a quiet day in the NHL with just three games on the ice. Our NHL picks are a mixed bag, full of strong plays and great value total bets. So check inside as we preview tonight's action.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. New Jersey Devils
Devils -135
This is an ugly game to handicap as you’ve got a Maple Leafs team that’s lost six straight and 14 of 17 coming into this matchup with a Devils team that’s dropped 13 of 19. The Leafs are just 4-15 when on the road with a total of 5.5 this season and if you’ve been betting them in those spots, they’ve cost you 11.4 units. On top of that, they’re a team that has given up 3.10 goals per game this season – among the worst – and will have to survive without captain Dion Phaneuf, who is out. The team is just 5-10-3 in the 18 games he’s missed since he joined the team.

The Leafs have had a tough time scoring goals but with the All-Star break giving them a chance to regroup, and the fact that they could get back forwards Leo Komarov, Peter Holland and Joffrey Lupul on Wednesday, we’ll expect them to do some scoring here.

Over is 5-1 in Devils games this month and we’ll take over with our NHL picks here, expecting the Devils to add to those trends.

Pittsburgh Penguins vs. Washington Capitals
You’ll have to keep an eye on the injury wire here as Sidney Crosby missed Tuesday’s game (wasn’t eligible) but took part in the morning skate, and could return on Wednesday. Evgeni Malkin is also hurt but is quite likely to miss the game. The Pens have success against the Capitals, winning three straight times in Washington and taking seven of the last eight meetings overall.

Something has gone wrong with the Caps as they have followed up their 7-0-2 streak with four straight losses. They gave up just 17 goals during that nine-game spell but have allowed 16 during their four-game losing streak. During that skid, they have gone over each time, averaging 8.0 combined goals per game. That’s going to lead me to an over as the Pens have not seen strong play out of Marc-Andre Fleury this month either. He got the night off on Tuesday but he’s expected back between the pipes on Wednesday. Look for us to get enough goals to get over the number here.

Chicago Blackhawks vs. Los Angeles Kings
Odds: Kings -104
The Blackhawks and Kings have had some epic showdowns recently – namely in the postseason – but this contest has a different feel to it. The Kings come into this matchup on a huge slump as they’ve lost four straight and 15 of 22. They’re a complete mess defensively as they’re giving up 3.33 goals per game this month but are giving up the fewest shots in the NHL this month 23.2. The issue is their defense and goaltending have really let them down.

With them slumping, take a shot with the Blackhawks. They’ve won five of six in this series and are the better team right now according to NHL odds. Plus you get them at a cheap price.
