The Flyers continue to sink in the standings and it appears inevitable that coach Berube gets canned at the end of the season. They’ll have to start turning things around today against the Rangers.
The New York Rangers Can Win Because…
They are playing very well right now. They have won eight of 10 and are 11-3 in their last 14 games. That’s’ quite impressive when you consider that they’ve been playing without lead goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. Normally, the Rangers success or failure is on his shoulders, so it speaks volumes to how this team has grown that they’re able to survive and thrive without him.
The Flyers are a mess these days as they’ve dropped six of their last nine games. They’re having a tough time scoring goals as they’ve scored two or less in seven of those nine outings. That won’t get any easier against Cam Talbot, who is 2-1-0 with a 0.67 GAA in three career starts versus the Flyers.
The Rangers opened as NHL odds favorite tonight and dominate this series as they’ve won four straight regular season meetings and five of six. They’re the logical choice for your NHL picks in this spot.
The Philadelphia Flyers Can Win Because…
They’re without Lundqvist. The Rangers have found ways to win without him but they’ve been scraping by. Sure, a win is a win but sometimes as a bettor, you have to dig a bit deeper than that. Talbot has been a nightmare in net for the Rangers. He’s allowed a first-minute goal three times now since taking over for Lundqvist and he’s allowed three or more goals in nine of his last 14 games. This month, he has a .905 save percentage and has coughed up 31 goals in 11 games. While the Flyers offense has had its fair share of problems recently, they might be able to get back on track in this spot against a Rangers team that has been quite flimsy between the pipes.
The Flyers have proven to be more competent at home (17-13) than on the road (9-23), so home ice advantage should be a factors. There aren’t many spots where the Flyers have been profitable but they are 15-9 when at home with a total of 5.5 this season. Those are some of the reasons why you might want to take them with your NHL picks in this spot.
This looks like a good spot to take the Rangers. They play well in this series, they’ve been playing well overall and the Flyers are a team that’s falling apart. Beyond that, the Rangers have won nine of their last 10 against teams with a losing record and are 21-7 in that spot this season. They’re also 16-5 against the division. As for the Flyers, they are just 8-15 against the division. You have to lay a bit of juice here but the Rangers are the better play.
