Our NHL consultant shares his two top plays for Saturday. He likes the totals in both the Rangers/Predators and Blue Jackets/Senators games. Find out why by reading his insightful NHL betting preview article pertaining to these contests.
New York Rangers vs. Nashville Predators
The Nashville Predators will host the New York Rangers in a Saturday afternoon matinee affair at 3:05 PM ET. According to the NHL odds at Pinnacle, Nashville is a -137 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.0. This will be the first meeting of the season between these teams. They met twice last season and those games saw an average of 3.5 goals combined scored per contest.
The New York Rangers will have to survive without the services of their star top goaltender Henrik Lundquist who’s been sidelined by a neck injury. They certainly could do a lot worse than Cameron Talbot as their backup goalie. Talbot has been solid in his last four starts by posting a .916 save percentage. I look for the Rangers to revert to a tight checking conservative game plan on the road. They’ve seen just two of their previous eleven games go over the total.
The Nashville Predators have been the most profitable home team in the NHL this season, going an outstanding 20-4 against the money line in that role. The Predators have gone over the total in each of their previous five home games. However, it must be noted, each of Nashville’s last two games was played at home, and they’ve gone under the total in nine of ten this season following two straight home games. Those ten results averaged just a combined 3.6 goals per contest. The Predators have killed off all 21 of their opponents power play chances during the last five games.
NHL Pick: Play on the Rangers and Predators to go under the total of 5.0 at BetOnline
Columbus Blue Jackets vs. Ottawa Senators
The Ottawa Senators will entertain the Columbus Blue Jackets tonight at 7:05 PM ET. According to the NHL betting odds at 5Dimes, Ottawa is a -160 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. These teams have met twice this season with Ottawa winning both times by the scores of 5-2 and 3-2.
The Columbus Blue Jackets have seemed to wake up from their recent offensive nightmares by crushing the St. Louis Blues last night 7-1. Prior to last night they had scored just four goals combined in their previous three games. Columbus has gone over the total in eleven of fifteen games the past two seasons following a home win by three goals or more.
The Ottawa Senators will be facing an opponent (Columbus) tonight which has allowed an average of 3.1 goals per game this season. Ottawa has gone over the total in nine of eleven games this season versus opponents which allow three or more goals per contest.
Both of these teams will have their backup goaltender between the pipes tonight. It will be Curtis Mcelhinney for Columbus, and Robin Lehner for Ottawa. Mcelhinney will be asked to assume a bigger role since Sergei Bobrovsky will be out the next four to six weeks with a groin injury. Lehner has had to carry the mail in goal for the Senators due to a hand injury suffered to Craig Anderson, sideling him for an indefinite period of time. I’m favoring this game to be a high scoring affair, and that’s what my lean will be for one of my NHL picks on Saturday.
NHL Pick: Play on Columbus and Ottawa to go over the total of 5.5 at 5Dimes.
