The Edmonton Oilers got spanked last night in Los Angeles by the Stanley Cup champion Kings and now on short rest, they visit the Arizona Coyotes in a matchup of two struggling teams. The Oilers are a huge underdog on the NHL odds (Coyotes laying as much as -275 in some shops) but can they surprise?

The Edmonton Oilers Can Win Because…
Arizona shouldn’t be laying this type of a number. The Coyotes have issues of their own. Their head coach called out goaltender Mike Smith after just one game and although the team bounced back in their second outing, it’s still unclear how Smith will react.

The Stanley Cup champion Kings laid -250 versus the Oilers last night. They deserve that type of price tag. The Oilers do not. This should be the Oilers easiest opponent to date, so take a shot with them here.

The Arizona Coyotes Can Win Because…
The Oilers are pathetic…again. Edmonton has lost all three of their games to start the 2014-15 season and has looked awful in the process. They’ve allowed at least five goals in every outing and are coming off a crushing 6-0 defeat at the hands of the Kings last night. So not only do you have a bad team on the road here but they are also in a back-to-back situation and on short rest.

On top of that, goaltender Viktor Fasth left last night’s game with a groin injury, which is less than optimal for the Oilers. Nothing is going right for them. That’s why the Coyotes are the play here.

Outlook & Pick
It’s early but the Coyotes are one of the biggest favorites of the year. The line opened around -250 with some shops like Pinnacle at around -230 and others like SportsInteraction as high as -275. Edmonton is bad but there’s just no way anyway can lay this type of juice right now – especially with Arizona. The Coyotes got crushed at home by Winnipeg in their opener (6-2) before bouncing back versus the Los Angeles Kings (3-2 OT).

As crazy as it sounds, take a small flier on the Oilers. They stink but Arizona shouldn’t be laying this type of juice against anyone. Based on the value on the NHL odds, Edmonton is worth a play with our NHL picks.
