At this time last week, the Toronto Maple Leafs were in a slump. They had lost three straight and were spinning their wheels. However, they’ve won two in a row since – both in overtime – and will try to extend that streak when they visit the Anaheim Ducks on Monday.

The Toronto Maple Leafs Can Win Because…

The Ducks have hit the skids. Clearly, something has happened to this once indomitable team and they can’t seem to get back on track. They were 36-8-5 after their first 49 games but they’re 7-6-2 in their last 15 games. They enter Monday’s game on a two-game losing streak with both losses coming at home. The Ducks were the last team to lose at home in regulation this season but since then, they’ve dropped seven of their last 11 on the Duck Pond. That includes failures on the NHL odds to Columbus, Dallas and Montreal, so Toronto definitely has a chance to win. The Leafs have won seven of their last eight against teams with a winning record, so they’ll have a good shot to cash in here even if the lines indicate they’re a big dog.

The Anaheim Ducks Can Win Because…

Toronto has lost five of seven on the road. They, too, have hit the skids as they are just 7-6 in their last 13 games. As per usual, they’re giving up goals aplenty and that’s been their downfall. They’ve allowed 16 goals in their last five games, which is simply too much in the NHL – especially when you’re matching up with a team like the Ducks.

Anaheim is 20-6 when at home with a total of 5.5. The numbers indicate they’ll take care of business here.

Outlook & Pick

Anaheim is a big favorite but the price is too high. They haven’t played like a team that deserved to be favored by this much – even if the Leafs are an east coast team starting a big west coast road trip. It might be a long shot but given the value, I’ll add the Leafs to my NHL picks. This game should be more even than people expect.
