The NHL odds are out for this game as the Philadelphia Flyers (20-18-4-4 SU, 27-19 PL, 16-19-11 OU) come in off a tough 3-2 home loss to the Bruins, which was their 3rd loss in a row, while the Washington Capitals (35-8-2-1 SU, 25-21 PL, 18-20-8 OU) will be anxious to get back to playing some hockey after having a couple of their games postponed due to a snowstorm. The home team is 10-4 the last 14 in the series.

Flyers Lose Tough One At Home to Boston
The Philadelphia Flyers came into their game v Boston on Monday night with a couple extra days off due to a snowstorm and they were trying to break a two game losing streak they were on, but it didn’t pan out as expected for them. The Flyers fell down 2-0 at the end of the first period, but they fought back over the next two periods to tie the game at two, before Boston scored with just 1:54 left in the game to win it and hand the Flyers their 3rd loss in a row. Scoring both goals for the Flyers in the loss was Wayne Simmonds, who now has 14 goals on the year. It’s always tough to lose a game late like that, especially after fighting back to tie it.

Michal Neuvirth took the loss in the game, but he is still 10-8 with a solid 2.10 GAA on the year. Steve Mason may get the start in this one and he is 10-18 with a 2.72 GAA on the year, including 5-9 with a 3.02 GAA on the road, while vs the Caps he is 7-6 with a 2.93 GAA in his career. Should Neuvirth get the start, then this would be his first ever start vs the Caps. The Flyers check in at 29th in the league in scoring, putting up just 2.2 gpg, while converting on just 17.4% of their power play chances, which is 22nd. On defense they come in at 15th in goals allowed, giving up 2.6 gpg, while allowing teams to convert on 22.3% of their power play chances, which is 26th.

Capitals are Anxious to Get Back On the Ice
What a first half of the season it has been for the Washington Capital so far as they lead the league in points with 73 and are the only team that has yet to lose more than two games in a row. The Caps have now had a few extra days off after having two games postponed, so they are eager for some action. The Caps have won seven of their last eight games and they have outscored their last two opponents 11-5, after they had an embarrassing loss to Buffalo prior to the winning streak. At home this year Washington has been awesome, going 18-4, while Braden Holtby is 16-2 with a 1.87 GAA here at the Verizon Center this year.

Holtby has been a huge part of the Caps start this year as he is 30-7 overall with a 2.01 GAA . He will get the start here and is 5-8 with a 2.88 GAA in his career vs the Flyers. Holtby isn’t the only thing leading this team as they have a strong offense that is lead by Alex Ovechkin’s 28 goals, which is 2nd in the league and Evgeny Kuznetsov’s 48 points, which is tied for 5th in the league. The Caps check in at 1st in the league in scoring, putting up 3.3 gpg, while converting on 27.1% of their power play chances, which is also tops in the league. On defense the caps come in at 1st in goals allowed, giving up just 2.2 gpg and 5th in penalty kill at 84.8%. This is the best team in the league and the numbers show it.

Trends for Philadelphia:
17-43 in their last 60 road games
1-4 in their last five vs. Eastern Conference

Trends for Washington:
41-15 in their last 56 home games
45-17 in their last 62 vs. the Eastern Conference

Betting Analysis
Hard to go against the Caps right now, especially with Holtby in the pipes and playing at home. This is clearly the best team in the league that just had a few extra days to recharge their batteries, which isn’t good for the rest of the league. The Flyers don’t have the offense or the goaltending to compete in this game and that has me looking at the Puckline for my NHL picks as it should be an easy win for the Caps here.
