Avalanche at MSG on Thursday
The Avalanche and Rangers will meet on Thursday in a non-conference battle. The opening faceoff at Madison Square Garden in downtown Manhattan is slated for 7:05 PM ET. Current NHL odds indicates that the Rangers are a -145 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. This will be the second and final meeting between these teams this season. The Rangers were a 2-1 winner at the Pepsi Center in Denver on 11/6/15. The road team has won all three encounters between these teams since last season.

Respectable on Road
The Colorado Avalanche have held their own on the road by going 7-8 against the money line. Hypothetically, $100 money line bettors would have shown a profit of $220 by wagering on Colorado in all of their 15 away games. They’re coming off an impressive 2-1 win at New Jersey on Tuesday. Despite that low scoring affair, Colorado has gone 7-2 over the total in their last nine games. Tonight will be Colorado’s third away game in the last four days, and its tenth road contest in their last twelve overall. Semyon Varlamov is expected to be in goal tonight for Colorado, and he’s been shaky in recent outings. During his previous four starts, Varlamov has compiled a terrible .879 save percentage. His overall save percentage of .887 in 14 starts also leaves a lot to be desired.

Rangers in recent Funk
The Rangers are coming off a 2-1 overtime shootout road loss against the Islanders last night. That was their fourth loss in the last five games. Despite their recent funk, they still sit atop the Metropolitan Division standings with a 2 point lead over Washington. The Rangers have an outstanding winning percentage of .654 this season. Thursday will be the third game in four days for the Rangers. Henrik Lundquist has started in goal in each of the previous two. Antti Raanta is expected to be between the pipes tonight, and he’s performed very well in his limited opportunities. Raanta has made six appearances including five starts this season, and has a superb .952 save percentage.

NHL Betting Angle
Any home team (Rangers) with a total of 5.5, playing in the first half of the season, coming off a loss to a divisional opponent, and they have a winning percentage of .600 to .700, resulted in those games going 33-13 (71.7%) over the total since 1996. Those 46 games averaged a combined 6.7 goals scored per contest. I’m going to follow this handicapping algorithm when making one of my NHL picks today.
