Capitals +1.5, +135  vs. Rangers -1.5, -155
NHL Betting Verdict:
The Rangers' bid to reach a second straight Stanley Cup finals goes through the Washington Capitals. In four of the last five years, these familiar foes collide. Rangers have won the last two series (2012-2013), both times going the distance.

Predictably, the anticipation is palpable as these two sides get ready to kick off round 2 of the NHL playoffs on Thursday at Madison Square Garden. Rangers, quite rightly, are the solid faves at -155 to win outright in game 1. They are through to the second round behind a convincing account against the Pittsburgh Penguins, winning in overtime in game 5. The Capitals reach the second round the hard way, going the distance with the Islanders. Look for the well rested Rangers to kick off this series with a hard fought win over the Capitals.

In the regular season, the Rangers took the 3-1 edge over the Capitals. The only hiccup a 5-2 loss at Madison Square Garden with Talbot in the net. Lundqvist hasn't lost to the Capitals in both occasions he was in net for the Rangers this season, winning both games 4-2.

It's the Eastern Conference semi-finals, with both teams now in the full swing of the NHL playoffs. It could go either way, but one has to like the Rangers at home as the smart NHL pick tonight.

NHL Picks: Rangers -155 and -1.5

Flames +1.5, +167 vs. Ducks -1.5, -192
NHL Betting Verdict:
The Calgary Flames upset the Vancouver Canucks to reach round 2 of the NHL playoffs. Next up is a tough ask against the Anaheim Ducks, one of the Stanley Cup betting favorites and the Western Conference betting faves to reach the Stanley Cup finals.

The Ducks, who emerged winners over the Winnipeg Jets in straightforward fashion after sweeping the series, are favored at -192  NHL betting odds to win outright. But this series could be more competitive than the odds makers would have you believe, not to mention a goal scoring feast could be on the NHL betting cards.

The Ducks lead the regular season series 3-2. The opened with a 4-3 shootout loss in Calgary and then went on to win 3-2 in Anaheim to level the series 1-1. The Ducks then went on to take the next two games 6-3 (both home and away), before losing their last meeting of the season 6-3 in Anaheim. Given these regular season accounts, it's sure to be a back-and-forth series that could potentially feature momentum swings and surprises. Indeed, the Flames at +167 NHL odds are worth the tickle for an upset.

As far as the opening game goes, it's the Ducks that come across as the smart NHL pick. They're after sweeping the series with the Jets, having not lost a home game in the NHL playoffs this postseason. What's more, they didn't lose a home game to the Flames in the regular season.

NHL Picks: Ducks -190 and -1.5 at Bovada
