Our NHL consultant has isolated what he deems to be his best value on a total tonight. Join us in reading his extremely informative NHL betting preview article, on the game between the Devils and Kings, which culminates with a selection on the total.
Devils in Hollywood to take on the Kings
The Kings and Devils will square off tonight at the Staples Center in Los Angeles with a slated 10:35 PM ET opening face-off time. We’ll be examining the total on this contest in order to make one of our NHL picks for Wednesday. According to the NHL odds at Bovada, the current posted total is 5.0. This will be the first meeting of the season between these clubs. Both of their encounters a season ago went under the number, and a grand total of 5-goals combined were scored in those two games.
This is a New Jersey Devils team which has struggled mightily to generate any type of consistent offensive production this season. They’re averaging only 2.2 goals and 25.0 shots on net per game. The Devils have seen just two of their previous thirteen games go over the total, and have scored two goals or less in fifteen of their last twenty-one contests. New Jersey is coming off a 3-2 overtime loss to the New York Islanders in their previous game. They’ve gone under the total in all seven games this season following an overtime loss. The Devils will be facing an opponent (Kings) tonight that averages 31.4 shots on goal per game. They’ve gone under the total in nineteen of twenty-six games this season versus teams averaging 29.5 or more shots on goal per contest.
Skinny on the Kings
The Los Angeles Kings head coach Darryl Sutter made a bold move in their previous game. He decided to sit his struggling star goaltender Jonathan Quick in favor of backup Martin Jones. That move paid out in spades as Jones posted his second shutout in eight starts this season during a 2-0 win over Toronto. A common theme in the modern era of the NHL is to ride a hot goaltender, and Jones is scheduled to be between the pipes for the Kings once again tonight. Los Angeles will be facing an opponent (Devils) that’s at a -0.6 goal per game differential this season. The Kings have gone under the total in fifteen of nineteen games the past two seasons when playing against an opponent that’s at a -0.5 or more goals per game differential. Those contests produced an average of just 4.0 goals combined scored per game.
After going through a horrible slump defensively, the Kings reverted back to their old ways by stifling a high scoring Toronto team on Monday. They not only shutout the offensively explosive Maple Leafs, they also held them to a paltry 19-shots on goal. The Devils have seen just 15 of their 44-games (34.2%) go over the total this season. I like this one to play on the low side of the number tonight.
