Free NHL picks and predictions for the Thursday night matchup between the Washington Capitals and the Boston Bruins. Find out why we have decided to place our picks on the total in tonight's battle.

Both the Washington Capitals and Boston Bruins were busy at the trade deadline. They’ll both unveil their shiny, new acquisitions on Thursday night when the two sides get together for the second time this week.

The Washington Capitals Can Win Because…

They’re expected to have Jaroslav Halak in net. The Caps were busy at the trade deadline and might come away as one of the biggest winners. Not only did they get Dustin Penner to help give their offense a boost, they got rid of disgruntled forward Martin Erat and acquired Halak, who immediately becomes the team’s top goaltender.

The Caps are a top 10 team when it comes to offense (ninth in goals scored). That’s never been the issue. However, goaltending has been as they give up 2.89 per game, which is ninth most. Halak will provide an upgrade, which makes the Caps a dangerous team all of the sudden.

The Boston Bruins Can Win Because…

They’ll be seeking some revenge. The Bruins lost at home to Washington on Saturday but that’s when the B’s were slumping. Since then, they’ve won two straight and bolstered their blue line by acquiring defenseman Andrej Meszaros.

The Bruins offense has been playing well of late, scoring 23 goals in their last five games. Washington is a pretty leaky defensive team, which means the Bruins should have no problems muscling their way to three goals at home. If they can do that, they’re going to cash in here on the NHL odds.

Outlook & Pick

If you’re thinking of adding the Caps to your NHL picks, keep in mind that this is a tough spot for them. They’re in a back-to-back and they might be spent after a physical tilt with the Flyers on Wednesday. On top of that, they’re facing a Bruins team that will want revenge after losing 4-2 at home to Washington on Saturday.

But since the juice is high on Boston, I’ll go with the under instead. With the Bruins bolstering their blue line and the Caps improving their goaltending, we should get to an under in this one.

Pick: Under 5.5 at Bodog
