The New York Rangers (40-23-8, 88 pts) travel to SAP Center to face the San Jose Sharks (39-25-6, 84 pts). San Jose is a -125 favorite on the NHL odds board at and the total is set at 5.

New York Rangers
The New York Rangers are struggling, losing three of their last four games, including last Thursday's 4-3 overtime setback against the Los Angeles Kings. J.T. Miller finished with a goal and an assist for the Rangers, who haven't won consecutive games this month. Dan Boyle and Kevin Hayes also scored and Henrik Lundqvist made 33 saves in his fourth straight loss.

The Rangers average 2.8 goals per game (5th in the league) and they score on 18.2 percent of their power plays. Mats Zuccarello leads the team with 53 points, Derick Brassard has scored a team-best 25 goals and Keith Yandle has 35 assists. New York gives up 2.6 goals per game (16th in the NHL) and they kill just 77.4 percent of their power play chances. Henrik Lundqvist allows 2.38 goals per game and Antti Raanta gives up 2.37 goals per game.

San Jose Sharks
The San Jose Sharks have won four of their last six games, although they did lose 3-1 against the Arizona Coyotes last Thursday. The Coyotes took advantage of two disallowed goals to get the win. Tomas Hertl scored for the Sharks and Martin Jones stopped 19 shots but it wasn't enough and they saw their four-game road winning streak end. San Jose is averaging 2.9 goals per game (4th in the league) and they score on 22.0 percent of their power plays (5th in the NHL). Joe Thornton leads the team with 68 points and 52 assists and Joe Pavelski has scored a team-best 26 goals. The Sharks allow 2.6 goals per game and they kill 79.2 percent of their power play chances. Martin Jones allows 2.28 goals per game and Alex Stalock gives up 2.94 goals per game.

Betting Trends
The Rangers are 17-20 in road games and 2-3 over the last 5 games. The Sharks are 14-18 in home games and 3-2 over the last five games. The Rangers are 7-4-2 against the Sharks since 1996. The Rangers are 3-2 against the Sharks over the last 3 seasons.

Final Analysis
The Sharks are at -123 on the NHL odds board while the Rangers are at +111 and the total has been set at 5. The Sharks struggled against the lowly Coyotes but they're 7-0 in their last seven games against teams with a winning record. The Sharks haven't been strong at home, but the Rangers have played poorly on the road, so that cancels things out a bit. This is a game that both teams need but I like the Sharks at home, even if the betting trends favor the Rangers. I'm taking the Sharks -123 with my NHL picks.
