The Leafs have never stopped playing hard and I don't expect that to change against the Redwings who are trying to hang on to their playoff spot. See my NHL pick inside.

Toronto Maple Leafs vs. Detroit Red Wings
The Red Wings and Toronto are playing their second game in as many days as Detroit is coming off a a come from behind victory, 3-2, against the Rangers, Saturday. and the Leafs were shutout by the Ottawa Senators, 4-0, despite out shooting Ottawa 29-17. Detroit has not faired well in the second of back to back games lately going 0-7 in their last seven attempts.

The Detroit victory wasn't without some bad news.  Defensemen Nicklas Cromwell left the game after getting his leg twisted between two Rangers. The injury is not considered serious but his status for Sunday is unknown although he is listed as doubtful.. If he is out they will miss his big hits and intimidated style.

I've been waiting all season for the Wing's power play to get better but they are still among the worst in the league at 17.4%. Their penalty kill isn't much better at 80.5% good for 18th in the league.  In order to beat good teams at least one of your special teams units have to be at least adequate.  Detroit has allowed seven power play goals in their last five game.

I can definitely see a let down spot here for Detroit after having to come back in their last two games against the Rangers and Winnipeg Jets. With a bigger match-up against Philadelphia on Tuesday it would be easy to understand if the Wings overlook this one. I think Detroit hangs on to this one but not enough to cover the 1.5 spread in the NHL odds boards

Jonathan Bernier is expected to get the start for the Leafs in nets. Bernier takes some time getting into the flow of the game at times. His numbers are putred in his last eleven appearances at 1-8 but against Detroit Bernier has been respectable posting a 4-2-2 record with a 1.94 goals against average and a .938 save percentage.

Detroit Head Coach, Jeff Blashill has not named a starting goaltender but I expect it to be Jimmy Howard. To say Howard has struggled would be a gross understatement. Like his counterpart, Howard gives up too many bad goals. Too inconsistent to earn my financial backing. Detroit's goals against average since the All-Star break is 3.11 a number that must come down. Prior their GAA was 2.46 so you can see that despite holding on to a playoff spot Detroit has slipped defensively.

The Wings have dropped three of their last five games and five of seven against the Eastern Conference

The 'total' in this game brings some huge trends that say bet the 'under' but none bigger than when the Leafs go on the road to face a team with a winning home record the 'under' is an impressive 24-10-2.

We are going to take the +1.5 goals as our NHL pick with the Leafs in this one. @DanaLaneSports
