Two of the best goaltenders in the NHL will go head-to-head on Monday night when the Los Angeles Kings visit the Montreal Canadiens. While Carey Price has long been expected to be elite, the Kings are being led by the unexpectedly good play of backup Ben Scrivens.

The Los Angeles Kings can win because…

They are getting great goaltending. People who make their NHL picks figured the Kings would sink in the standings after they received the news they’d be without Jonathan Quick for a while. After all, how do you replace a Vezina Trophy-type of goaltender? The answer appears to be by using Ben Scrivens and Martin Jones. In the eight games that they’ve been asked to replace Quick, the Kings are 8-1-3 and have posted a 1.42 GAA, which is the best in the league over that span.

Whoever is in net for the Kings on Tuesday, he’ll give the team a good shot to win. If they can turn this into a defensive showdown where one goal makes the difference, the Kings will have an excellent shot to win on the road.

The Montreal Canadiens can win because…

They are red hot. They’ve won five straight overall and eight straight in this series. This is not a trip that the Kings like to make, going from the warm temperatures on the West Coast to the frigid temperatures of the Northeast.

The Habs are getting great goaltending these days as they are 9-0-1 in their last 10. Over that span, their 1.90 GAA is second-best only to the Kings. Price has won seven straight against the Kings while posting a 1.71 GAA against them. That’s reason enough to add the Habs to your sports picks.

Outlook & Pick

The Kings are worth a look on the NHL odds here. They are 9-3-2 on the road. However, I’ll look for the under instead. Given how both teams are playing defensively right now, that’s the play that makes the most sense to me.
