We’ll be examining the NHL contest between Pittsburgh and Calgary on Friday. Our betting preview article details the plight of both teams in their recent games, and we’ll conclude the piece with a money line selection on the contest.

Penguins invade the Scotiabank Saddledome
The Calgary Flames will host the Pittsburgh Penguins on Friday at 9:05 PM ET. According to the NHL odds at Bookmaker, Pittsburgh is a -120 money line favorite, and the posted total is 5.5. The teams have met once this season and Pittsburgh skated away with a 3-1 home win.

Stuck in the Mud
The Pittsburgh Penguins have been spinning their wheels in recent games, and just can’t seem to get it going. The Penguins have lost six of the last nine, and twelve of their previous nineteen games. What’s really been concerning of late is the lack of offensive production. The Penguins have scored a miniscule four goals combined in their previous four games, and that includes being held scoreless in two of those contests. Needless to say, going under the total in recent Penguins games has been a profitable venture. They’ve seen the last four, and six of their previous seven games go under the total.

We Have a Short Slate Tonight, But That Doesn't Mean We Can't Profit from It

Flames burning Bright
Unlike their opponent this evening, the Calgary Flames have been impressive in recent games. They’re winners of the last three, eight of the last ten, and twelve of their last seventeen games. The Flames have allowed just seven goals combined over their previous five games. Calgary is coming off a 3-1 win over their Pacific Division rival the San Jose Sharks. The Flames have gone an outstanding 7-1 this season following a win by two goals or more versus a Pacific Division opponent. Tonight will be the finale of a six game in eleven day home stand for the Flames, and they’ve yet to play on the road since reconvening from the all-star break.

Final Analysis
Whenever I get a hot team like Calgary installed as a money line home underdog, versus an opponent (Pittsburgh) that’s been struggling in recent games, very seldom will I pass on the value. I’m certainly not going to squander this opportunity tonight, and will use the home team as one of my NHL Picks on Friday.
