Our NHL consultant shares his two top totals selections for Saturday. Read his convincing analysis on why he loves the totals in the games between the Sabres/Islanders and Devils/Rangers.

Buffalo Sabres vs. New York Islanders 7:05 PM ET
The NHL betting odds at Heritage indicates that the total in this contest is 5.0. Since the start of the 2013-2014 NHL campaign, these teams have met five times, and those contests averaged a combined 6.2 goals per game.

The Buffalo Sabres are the lowest scoring team in the NHL. However, they’ve gone over the total in five of their previous six games, scored three goals or more in each of those contests, and also allowed four or more in four in all but two of those tilts. Buffalo is coming off a 4-3 home loss to Chicago last night. Anders Linback was in goal for that defeat, and in all likelihood he’ll get the night off on Saturday. The Sabres will turn to either rookie Andrey Makarov who was recently called up from their AHL affiliate in Rochester, or Matt Hackett who has been extremely shaky in his four starts this season.

The Islanders have gone over the total in each of their previous two contests, are averaging 3.3 goals per game at home this season, and have allowed three goals or more in all of their last four.

I like this game to be a high scoring affair, and one of my NHL picks on Saturday will be reflective of that prediction.

NHL Pick: Sabres and Islanders to go over the total of 5.5 at The Greek

New Jersey Devils vs. New York Rangers
The NHL betting odds at 5Dimes has a posted total of 5.0 on this game. This will be a battle of two very good starting goaltenders, Cory Schneider of the Devils, and Henrik Lundqvist for the Rangers. The Devils have scored two goals or less in regulation time for seven consecutive games, and have failed to go over the total in any of their previous eleven contests.

NHL Totals Betting System
The Rangers are coming off two straight wins by identical scores of 3-2. The Devils defeated Montreal last night 3-2 in overtime. The combination of those results has created a very favorable betting system on the total.

Any home team (Rangers) with a total of 5.0 or less, allowing two goals or less in each of their previous two contests, versus an opponent (Devils) coming off an overtime win, has seen that home team go under the total in 42 of those 57-games (73.5%) during the past five seasons.

NHL Pick:  Play on the Devils and Rangers to go under the total of 5.0 at 5Dimes
