After a quiet Thanksgiving Thursday where we only saw one NHL game on the card, the league ramps up with 11 games and 22 teams on the ice on Friday. One game will be featured on NBC with an early start as the New York Rangers visit the Philadelphia Flyers at 1:00 PM ET. The Flyers are favored on the NHL betting lines for this one.
The New York Rangers Can Win Because…
The Flyers are a train wreck right now. Philadelphia comes into Friday’s affair having lost six of their last seven games. Although the Flyers are known for offense, they’ve done very little to light the lamp in that stretch. The Flyers have scored just eight goals in their last five games and half of those came in a 4-2 win over Columbus last Saturday, and this should be considered when looking at the NHL odds. In other words, they’ve scored just four goals in their last four losses.
The Rangers aren’t a great road team but the good news is their offense is working well in away games. The Rangers have tallied 19 goals in seven away games, which puts them top 10 in road scoring. The Philadelphia Flyers pathetic defense should help them improve those numbers even more.
The Philadelphia Flyers Can Win Because…
They’re finally back at home. The Flyers have been a complete mess on the road, losing six straight away games. On the season, they have just two wins in 10 road games. However, they’ve been much more serviceable on their home ice as they’re 6-5 in front of the home audience. They’ve actually won six of their last eight at home.
The splits are quite significant as the Flyers score a healthy 3.45 goals per game at home, which is the fifth-best average. On the road, that number drops all the way down to 24th where they average 2.10. That’s a difference of nearly 1.5 goals per game. The same goes for their defense as they allow 3.3 goals per game on the road, which is among the worst averages. At home, it’s not great but it’s better at 2.73.
The Rangers aren’t a very good road team as they’ve dropped five of their seven away games this season. Home-ice advantage is quite significant in this matchup, so take the Flyers with your NHL picks.
The Thanksgiving break couldn’t have come at a better time for the Flyers. They’ve been in a massive slump and Thursday gives them a chance to regroup and get some home cooking. That should be quite important in this one as the Flyers are a solid home team while the New York Rangers are bad on the road. New York is giving up an average of 3.43 goals per game on the road, which will be a probably against a Flyers offense that produces at home. We don’t have a line out yet for this one as it’s very early but the Flyers are still the pick. Expect them to win this one.
