If big money is sharp money, then the sharps appear to be loading up on the Philadelphia Eagles with their Week 2 NFL picks. The New York Jets? Not so much.
Jason's 2015 record as of Sept. 19: 5-3 ATS; 3-2 Total
Earlier this week, we made some bold choices with our football picks for Sunday's big afternoon game (4:25 p.m. ET, FOX) between the Philadelphia Eagles and their NFC East rivals, the Dallas Cowboys. Did we actually bet the OVER on a total of 55 points? Must have been something in the water. But we feel perfectly cromulent about the Eagles as 5-point home faves.
We feel even better after looking at the expanded consensus reports. It's late Saturday afternoon as we go to press, and the Eagles are pulling in the highest average bet ($170) of any team on the Week 2 NFL odds board. The Cowboys may be getting over 51 percent support in terms of population, but over 60 percent of the money has landed on Philly. That's usually indicative of sharp action on the Eagles.
Big Money Goes Around the World
If we switch from average bet size to total handle, it's the New England Patriots vacuuming up the action this week. They're officially a pick 'em on the road versus the Buffalo Bills; we've already given the Patriots our coveted BeeVee award for Best Value in Week 2, and according to our surveys, there's over twice as much money on New England as there is on Philadelphia. That's with a healthy average bet of $151, as well.
Even better, our expanded consensus report shows six $1000+ bets on the Patriots. The Bills have many of the characteristics that sharp bettors love, but fading New England hasn't been an overall profitable decision in, oh, a decade or so. Buffalo has under 38 percent consensus in this matchup with 24 percent of the action, including three big bets. No doubt the public will open up on the Brady Bunch, too.
Colt Hard Cash
Looking at the other end of the spectrum, the New York Jets have the smallest average bet size for Week 2 at $54. This is despite the Jets getting the full seven points for their Monday Night Football matchup (8:30 p.m. ET, ESPN) with the Indianapolis Colts at Lucas Oil Field. The Colts aren't exactly raking it in at $75 a pop, but they are getting over 55-percent consensus and over 63 percent of the money.
It's possible the sharps aren't very keen on playing either side Monday night. Or maybe they're kicking in a little cash now on Indianapolis to goose the Jets up to +7.5 NFL odds. These things happen. We've already got the Jets in our Week 2 NFL picks, so if you're going to hop on board, no rush – we've got until Monday night, and we definitely expect the public to come in on the Colts between now and then. In the meantime, shop smart, and may the prolate spheroid be with you.
