A sense of trepidation and concern about the Dallas Cowboys prevails, all of which are driving expectations low in NFL betting circles for the upcoming season. Find out what we think as we rundown through the NFL schedule and project Cowboys’ win totals.

Dallas Cowboys to fall behind
Dallas are coming off an 8-8 season, but it would appear very little improvement on that mark is expected this season. Bookies chalk the NFL odds at 7.5 total wins with the Over betting pick matched at -135 and the Under at +105. Is this the right prognosis or just misguided foreboding?

Week 1 vs. San Francisco 49ers
Opening the season against one of top Super Bowl favourites is hardly an ideal situation for a side that has been mostly average these past few seasons and is expected to take a step back. Tony Romo isn’t a 100% either so he’ll have his work cut out against a solid Niners defense.
NFL Pick: Loss

Week 2 @ Tennessee Titans
It’s the walking wounded as Jake Locker and Tony Romo collide, two quarterbacks coming off injuries with big question marks hanging over their heads. This could go either way, but forced to make a choice we’re giving it to the Cowboys. Titans failed to impress last year. It would take a complete turnaround to do so here.
NFL Pick: Win

Week 3 @ St. Louis Rams
This is a matchup between teams facing contrasting fortunes. The Rams have been enjoying steady improvement over the past few seasons, a trend that is expected to continue this year. Cowboys, by contrast, would appear to be on a steady decline. This isn’t a good matchup for Tony Romo and Company, especially on the road where the Cowboys tend to struggle.

NFL Pick: Loss

Week 4 vs. New Orleans Saints
Last season, the Saints decimated the Cowboys 49-17 in Week 10. Granted the Saints had home advantage on the unmemorable Sunday for Dallas, but that’s not the reason for their victory. Offensively, the Saints exposed the weakness on Cowboys defense. That defense hasn’t improved in the offseason. It’s going to be a brutal day for Romo if his defense fails to show up.
NFL Pick: Loss

Week 5 vs. Houston Texans
Houston Texans are in rebuilding mode after a horrendous season in which they won just two games. At the start of last season, they were dubbed playoff contenders. Based on the talent of their bench, that is still the case. Bookies chalk their season at 7.5 with the Over heavily favoured at -160. It would be wise not to underestimate the Texans here. They should give the Cowboys a run for their money. Cowboys have home advantage and that might prove deciding.
NFL Pick: Win

Week 6 @ Seattle Seahawks
Tony Romo and the Cowboys set up as no-hopers against Seattle Seahawks on the road. The hosts are superior in every way that matters. Chalk it as a tough day for the Cowboys.
NFL Pick: Loss

Week 7 vs. New York Giants
Dallas Cowboys swept the series with the Giants last season, but only just. They won 36-31 at home and then 24-21 on the road. Don’t expect such luck this time around. The Giants were horrible last season. They are expected to be much better this term. Dallas will have a tough time beating Eli Manning this time around, even on home ground.
NFL Pick: Loss

Week 8 vs. Washington Redskins
Dallas Cowboys clinched the series over the Redskins last season. If we’re take the improvements made to the Redskins seriously, this could be a tossup. Everything depends on the health of RGIII and how well he plays on the day. Forced to make a decision, we’re giving the win to the home team. Last season, Dallas won 31-16 at home.
NFL Pick: Win

Week 9 vs. Arizona Cardinals
Cardinals potent offense could give Cowboys defense a headache, especially if defense proves porous as it was last season. This isn’t a good matchup for Dallas at all. They could still edge past Arizona with home ground advantage, but we’re giving it to the Cardinals because they appear to be the better side on both sides of the ball.
NFL Pick: Loss

Week 10 @ Jacksonville Jaguars
Tony Romo struggles to win on the road, simple as that. On paper, this should be a straightforward win for the Cowboys. But NFL bettors looking for Tony Romo to lay an egg this season, might consider this matchup.
NFL Pick: Loss

Week 11 - Bye

Week 12 @ New York Giants
New York Giants have undergone significant improvements in the offseason, which set them up really well for this season. In this divisional clash, it’s also a matter of Giants’ pride (Dallas swept the series) and placement in the table. Look for the Giants to win their home clash with the Cowboys.
NFL Pick: Loss

Week 13 vs. Philadelphia Eagles
Dallas Cowboys beat the Eagles 17-3 last season on the road but lost their home clash 24-22 in December – Nick Foles and the Eagles high-scoring offense proving the difference against a suspect defense. Expect the same factors to decide this game as well.
NFL Pick: Loss

Week 14 @ Chicago Bears
Chicago Bears rode roughshod over Dallas Cowboys last season, beating the Cowboys 45-28 in Chicago. Once again, the Cowboys will have all to do to stop the Bears on the road.
NFL Pick: Loss

Week 15 @ Philadelphia Eagles
Not to be too repetitive: but the Cowboys struggle on the road, particularly Tony Romo. Hard to see how Romo could come up with answers in Philadelphia, especially if the porous defense allows Eagles high-scoring offense to get too far ahead early.
NFL Pick: Loss

Week 16 vs. Indianapolis Colts
If Andrew Luck lights up, he could singlehandedly runaway with this game. The way Cowboys defense is shaping up right now, it’s ideally suited for a Colts blowout win. That said, Indianapolis Colts defense isn’t so formidable either, so if Romo can keep it close, he could carry the Cowboys to a belated home victory.
NFL Pick: Win

Week 17 @ Washington Redskins
The Dallas Cowboys went 3-5 on the road last season. They don’t play particularly well on the road, but if they are to get a rare road win this season, this could be the game that delivers some away cheer.
NFL Pick: Win

NFL Betting Verdict
Dallas Cowboys have consistently finished 8-8 over the course of the last three seasons. But an aging force, a questionable quarterback in Tony Romo and wholly off colour defense has us considering the worst season yet for the Cowboys, as low as  5-11 and as high as 7-9. Whichever way you slice it on your NFL picks, we expect them to go Under the 7.5 totals at +105.
