We look back at week 9 NFL betting action and recap all the results against the spread, SU and totals. Don’t miss out on the various NFL betting trends that emerged.

NFL Week 9 Main Highlights
The week featured several duds, some upsets and a few scoring fests. With only the Colts and Giants to square off on Monday Night, closing week 9 NFL betting action we look back at some of the earlier results. The highlight reel: Saints finally win on the road, Patriots defy the odds, Rams mastermind another upset over a divisional rival and the Raiders continue on their winless streak on the season.

NFL Week 9 Betting Results
It was a bit of a topsy-turvy week as the favourites went 8-4 SU but 6-5-1 ATS. Home favourites cashed 8-4SU but went 6-5-1 ATS. Finally, it was almost dead even on totals as the over-under went 6-5-1.

Overall NFL Betting Results
Adding the results of the previous 12 games to the season’s tally, favourites edge underdogs 88-44-1 SU through nine weeks of NFL betting. Against the spread it’s almost neck-and-neck with the favourites nosing ahead 65-64-4. Home vs. Away trends reveal the former edges the latter 79-53-1 SU, but it’s dead even against the spread 65-65-3. Finally, the over edges under 70-60-3 overall.

Thursday Night Football Recap
New Orleans Saints are back! The Saints win on the road for the first time this season, first time in 11 months when they beat the Panthers 28-10. It was also only the second time this season that Thursday Night Football delivered on the UNDER in total betting. The only other previous UNDER to cash was week 2 NFL betting when the Ravens beat the Steelers 26-6.

Home Sweet Home
Big (read: runaway) home favourites to cash in SU betting included the Bengals, Chiefs, Browns and Seahawks. Of the four indisputable home faves, however, only the Chiefs cashed in both SU and ATS betting markets. The Chiefs opened as the 9.5-point favourites over the floundering Jets and that spread fluctuated through the week, first moving towards the Chiefs o a high of 10.5-points before coming down and settling on the 8-point mark (or thereabouts in sportsbooks like Pinnacle) before kickoff. Tale told, the Chiefs won 24-10 to both win SU and cover handily.

Other home favourites that came through on the NFL odds included the Miami Dolphins in a shocking 37-0 win over the Chargers. Dolphins were matched as the 2-point faves on the spread and the nominal -140 home faves.

Home Underdogs Defy Odds
The Patriots defied the NFL odds on Sunday when they beat Denver Broncos 43-21. Patriots cashed as the 3-point home pups and the +145 home underdogs in SU betting. The 64-point extravaganza went well and truly OVER the 54.5-point total set for the game.

Bookies kept jumping the fence with the divisional clash between the Baltimore Ravens and Pittsburgh Steelers, with each side oscillating from favouritism to disadvantage. Early markets had the Ravens favoured at -130 on the road and as the 1-point favourite on the spread, but later markets bet up the Steelers from +110 over Even money and as high as 2-point favourites at home. So long as you backed the Steelers – be it as home dogs or home faves didn’t matter – as they defeated the Ravens soundly 43-23. It marked the Steelers third straight win and third Over in as many weeks.

Road Underdogs Punching Above Their Weight
Several road underdogs punched above their weight class in week 9 NFL picks, beginning with the St. Louis Rams who orchestrated the biggest road upset with a win over the San Francisco 49ers. The 13-10 win by the Rams marked their second win over a divisional rival and saw them cash as the whopping +375 road dogs and 9.5-point pups (some books saw that number swell as high as 10.5-points).

Jacksonville Jaguars lost to the Cincinnati Bengals 33-23 on Sunday. The books closed on a 10-point spread, so NFL bettors that weighed in late had to settle for the push. Early markets had this game set to a 12-point spread however. Those backers that piled onto those early odds cashed on the Jaguars as the 12-point pups.

The winless Oakland Raiders pulled off one of the biggest covers of the week. Raiders opened as the absurd 15-point underdogs in  early markets, but that number was bet down to 13-points or thereabouts at closing time. Regardless, they covered in a 30-24 defeat to the Seahawks. Finally, the Cardinals cashed SU and ATS in a 28-17 win over Dallas Cowboys.

Road Favourites Mix It Up
Saints, Eagles, Broncos, and Redskins were some of the marquee road favourites on this week’s NFL betting slate. While the Saints and Eagles came through on their favourable nods, the Broncos and Redskins fell flat. Saints beat the Panthers to cash as the -175 and 2.5-point road faves and Eagles ran away 31-21 winners in Houston to cash as the -125 and 2-point road faves. Patriots improved to 8-1 ATS behind Tom Brady as the home underdogs in the 43-12 win over the Broncos. And Redskins whittled away a good lead to lose to the Vikings 29-26, marking the return of RGIII to the line-up on a negative note.
