Pittsburgh Steelers vs Baltimore Ravens

Last year, Baltimore defeated Pittsburgh on 2 occasions, each by 3 points (20-17 and 23-20). Despite the current form or standings, this fierce division rival is normally closely contested in the regular season. Including the 2 contests last year, 11 of 14 recent regular season games in the series have been decided by 3 or fewer points.

Many questions are swirling for the Steelers, as they enter this contest at 4-3 SU ATS following consecutive defeats and their BYE week. There is a questionable status of 3 key offensive starters. Those include WR Wheaton, RB Williams and the most important of those 3, QB Ben Roethlisberger. You will remember the injured meniscus for which Ben underwent minor outpatient surgery, the day after his injury, October 17th.

QB Landry Jones was at the helm for the Steelers when they hosted high-flying New England the following weekend. Though Pittsburgh dropped that contest 27-16, as 8 point home dog, they nonetheless outgained New England with QB Jones actually out passing QB Brady (281-222). The Steelers do have a major drop-off at the signal caller position if Ben is unable to make a post. But, it is clear from Jones’ performance vs. New England, that he has made notable strides in his years served as a backup with the Steelers.

For the Baltimore Ravens, they also enter a much-needed week of rest. Following a rare losing season (5-11 SU, 5-11 ATS) under 9th year HC Harbaugh much was expected from the Ravens in a bounce back year. They pleased their fans with a 3-0 SU start. But, two of those wins were against lowly Cleveland and Jacksonville, a combined 2-13 SU. Since that time, they have lost 4 consecutive games, including 2 weeks ago to the Jets (24-16). In that contest, they were outrushed 39/155 to 12/6. THAT IS NOT A MISPRINT. The Ravens rushed just 6 times for 12 total yards. With veteran QB Flacco still struggling to recover from offseason knee surgery, the injury-plagued Ravens, at 3-4 SU, 2-5 ATS, are clearly in need of this victory. They enter this contest on a negative point spread slide of 8-17 and 0-4 ATS. They have, however, won 3 consecutive games against the Steelers on this field.

Final Analysis

This is a tough game to call without knowing the clear status of QB Roethlisberger for the Steelers and how that would affect the NFL odds. What we do know is that Baltimore has a defense that is 88 YPG better than the Steelers, the advantage of their home field and they are in clear bounce-back mode following 4 consecutive defeats.  At this writing, I can only offer an opinion on the Baltimore SIDE in this contest.
