Let’s hotfoot over to the NFL odds board. A whole slew of standout matchups are on the NFL betting menu and we weigh in on several games in search of super early week 9 value NFL picks.
Week 9 NFL Matchups and Odds
The clash between Peyton Manning and Tom Brady practically leaps off the page in Week 9’s book of NFL betting. When future Hall of Fame quarterbacks collide, adding further fuel to the debate about who is the greatest of all time (GOAT), the game and its outcome is sure to prove a major talking point when all is said and done. However, theirs is not the only captivating matchup on the books. NFL bettors have several pivotal games to consider, including the Saints and Panthers and Ravens and Steelers, to name a few. Here’s a look at these compelling matchups complete with NFL betting picks.
Saints -1.0 vs. Panthers +1.0
That the NFC South title race is currently being contested by two teams sat on losing records on the season only goes to show just what a shambles the division is in behind underachieving outfits. As things currently stand, Panthers lead the division with a 3-4-1SU record, but the Saints are nipping at their heels with a 3-4SU record. Panthers are after a narrow 13-9 defeat to the Seahawks at home in week 8 NFL betting, while the Saints bounced back with a convincing 44-23 win over the Packers at the Superdome. So who will prevail in this highly anticipated NFC South clash on Thursday Night?
The impact of this game towards postseason ambitions for both sides is pivotal: top spot in the table is on the line. Needless to say, Panthers will be desperate to defend their NFC South title with a home win and the Saints will be looking to leapfrog the Panthers behind their first winning streak of the season.
On account of last week’s results, the Saints have emerged as the nominal favourites on the road. Seeing how inconsistent the Panthers have been this season, proving beatable on both sides of the ball, Saints do have the notional shot according to online sportsbooks. Of course, there is the small matter of their winless road form this season (0-4SU). They’ll need to transcend those travelling woes, which are horrendous by their lofty standards. However, if Drew Brees can channel the form he showed against the Packers, the Saints could finally cash on the road. For our money, the Saints are a good NFL pick here despite the road evidence that says otherwise. What’s more, if he does channel that form that saw him toss the Packers in a 44-23 win, the sharp money would be in the ‘over’ 49.0 in total betting. (The over edges the under 7-1 in Thursday Night NFL betting this season.)
NFL Picks: Saints -1; Over 49.0 -110
Broncos -3.0 vs. Patriots +3.0
Despite trailing 5-10SU to Tom Brady in their head-to-heads, Peyton Manning takes his Broncos to Foxborough as the road favourites matched at 3-points across sportsbooks. Denver (6-1SU, 4-3 ATS) are enjoying a four-game winning streak (they’ve also covered in their last four straight) ahead of their clash with the Patriots, marking the 16th showdown between Peyton and Brady. Patriots are also behind a four game winning streak (6-2, 4-4 ATS) but, arguably, their body of work pales slightly in comparison. Broncos have built their record with wins over respectable teams, teams that were impressive last season, if not playoff contenders, which adds weight to their credentials as the road favourites in New England. On the strength of their current season and convincing form, backing the Broncos does seem to be the smart NFL pick. Granted the Patriots have gotten the better of the Broncos in recent memory, including last season’s come-from-behind win inspired by a prolific late surge from Tom Brady. It’s hard to imagine the Patriots pulling off another such miraculous win when they’re slightly banged up and light on the bench.
NFL Picks: Broncos -3
Ravens +1.5 vs. Steelers -1.5
The Ravens succumbed to a narrow 27-24 defeat to Cincinnati, while the Steelers shocked all and sundry with a eye-popping 51-34 win over the Colts in week 8 NFL betting. As a result, the AFC North has gone tits up with Cincinnati atop with a 4-2-1SU record and the Ravens and Steelers tied in second place on a 5-3SU record. By all accounts, this is a pivotal game towards the playoff aspirations of both sides. Although form is generally good in both camps this season, the Ravens slipped to 2-2 SU against divisional opponents after the defeat to the Bengals. They’ll be desperate to avoid a second straight defeat against an AFC North opponent. Steelers, meanwhile, will look to avoid the hangover after a big win as they attempt to build their first significant winning streak this season. Ravens are 5-2 SU in their last seven games against the Steelers but the Steelers are 11-4 SU when playing the Ravens at home.
NFL Picks: Steelers -1.5
